Okay I HAD planned on hunting this year, but it looks like that's shot. First a little background, then what happened. About 5 yrs ago my dad and I acquired permission to hunt where my dad boards his horses. Its great, it borders state forest, we have access to a 200 yd. Easement that covers the entire back of the property. Over those past 5 yrs. We have taken a few deer there. We got the deer pretty much following a consistent path over the course of those 5 yrs, which was a lot of work. We had 2 blinds each, all near major food and water sources and bedding areas, the trifecta, if you will. Now what happened.
This year around January our blinds were destroyed, by logging, the deer paths were obviously disrupted, and so on. So around march and April we started building new ones as a temporary replacement. All the while, scouting for a better spot. Around may we had both had a spot picked for a permanent one, a spot for food plots/mineral licks, and dad picked a spot for a tree stand. Next week he said wed build em and set up the tree stand. Next week came he went camping, no biggie next week then. Next week came, same thing, he went camping. Again, next week he said, well when that next week came, he went out to set up a blind, without me. that day, when I was talking to him he told me specifically he's moving me somewhere else because he wants my area instead, which is where he made the new blind.
A couple weeks later he called me and said we were gonna go set mine up. I waited and waited, nothing. Called him, no answer, I got worried. A few hrs after he was supposed to pick me up he called, and said he went out to set up another blind. I asked why he didn't pick me up then, he said he was still deciding where to put me. Of course I'm wondering, a) I'm not a child, b) I chose my own spots since I was a child, c) why now can't I choose my own?
So by this point its working on July, I'm without a blind, and been run out. Either way, the next week game continued until deer season opened up. Then, as I was about to get my license, on opening day, albeit I didn't really know why I was going to buy one, my car takes a crap. REALLY??!!
So then as I'm talking to my dad later that same day, he tells me he set up the tree stand and decided he would wait until gun season to hunt. I thought that was wierd seeing as he took off the entire 2nd & 3rd week of archery season specifically to hunt. I had told him after hearing that I would just wait till gun season too, so I can get my car fixed. Especially because I had about $150 to spend still for archery season, gun season I'm ready for.
During this same conversation, he asks what I'm gonna use, and I reply with my Rossi .45 colt. He says, "What .45 colt?" . I reply, "The one you shot a few months ago. The lever action." He then says, " You CAN'T use that, that's a HIGH POWERED RIFLE." I asked him then if he has looked at the 2013-14 trapping guide. "I don't need to, shotgun or muzzle loader, anything else can be considered a high powered rifle. And I won't let you hunt deer with a high powered rifle." he says. REALLY!!???
In the end, I might hunt next year, by myself. Watch who you hunt with, they might run you out or worse, tell you that you can only hunt with a shotgun or muzzle loader.
