the FFL keeps them.......... FOREVER, or until they close up shop......... then when they close up shop, they all get shipped to the BATFE, who probably keeps them FOREVER.

    Yup.

The require them and the log books to be kept, but they are not allowed to create anything that resembles a database or central record. So they (BATFE) requires the FFL to keep the records until the FFL closes. Then the boxes go into storage.

Remember the scene at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark? You know, with the gigantic warehouse?

    Take cash.

    Give shotgun.

    Shake hands. [STRIKE](optional)[/STRIKE]

    Yes.

This has been beaten to death in other threads.

For all you that think a BoS is so great, what keeps me from forging a BoS to "Joe Schmoe"? If you want to get a BoS "just in case" then you probably should pay $25-$50 and transfer through a dealer - a disinterested third party.

Your gun, your rules on the sale. If the buyer does not like your conditions, he can always go buy elsewhere. Legally, you cannot be held accountable for a legal face to face sale of a privately owned firearm. I have always asked if the seller wants a bill of sale when I have bought a private purchase. Heck, some people want to see a LTCH and a drivers liscense. It is all about what you are comfortable with. If you are worried at all about something coming back on you, then get a dated bill of sale with his signature on it.

Thought the FBI had to destroy them after 90 days
    FBI doesn't get the 4473's

what he said. if the 4473's are destroyed it could be serious for the gun store that does it. There is always a record.
