    ditto what gunman41mag and bj say... I have some Red Dot from the mid 80's and I still use it occassionaly to load 38 special and everything is hunky-dory. Modern smokeless powder is really "extruded high explosive" and not likely to degrade much unless stored in a *very* adverse environment. The sniff test is probably the best advice of all. If you smell anything other than the ordinary, don't use it. Just make sure you know what "normal" dry powder smells like... probably little to no smell.

    DISCLAIMER: I am of course no expert in high explosives nor have I played one on TV, but I have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express once in the last 3 years...

    Just make sure you know what "normal" dry powder smells like... probably little to no smell.
    For the record, all of the powder I use on a regular basis (various flavors of Hodgdon) has the "mild, slightly sweet" smell that Broom_jm mentioned.
