I would choose linux way over mac.. [snip] I do not like or use anything apple as I prefer linux.
You, um, do realize what OS X is... right?

If you really wanted to run OSX you can get the same hardware and build a PC, get a copy of Snow Leopard or Lion, install that and Windows 7...dual boot, buy a really nice tower and monitor...still save money. However if you're not doing anything that requires certain specific Apple software, you're kind of just wasting money buying an Apple computer.
Macs are less likely to get a virus because the majority of the world uses Windows, hackers aren't going to target a small segment. That said, I've got a laptop that is 5 or 6 years old, upgraded to Windows 7 and it has been used for all kinds of downloading from torrents (never anything illegal). It has rarely had an active virus or malware scanner running and usually only gets scanned once every few months. It has NEVER had a virus and it isn't bogged down with malware. Most people get a virus because they get click happy and don't have a clue what they're clicking on...if you have self control and understand how most viruses are sent, you'll be perfectly fine running a Windows machine.
Once again, use for internet browsing/word processing/storing music and pictures...normal user types of things...Apple = overpriced. If you are doing something that NEEDS something specific, spend the money.

a Unix kernel without the über-geek pretentiousness?
Why not buy a quality tv and hook up using hdmi cable or dvi. That's what I did
If you will drive a mile or two out of your way for coffee from a Starbucks drive-thru rather than get coffee from Speedway Or McDonalds which is on your way, get a Mac.

Yes, but for $100 more, you can have a computer that will exceed your expectations and last much longer. AND you don't have to pay big bux for virus/malware/intrusion protection.A 500 windows laptop from bestbuy will handle all your needs original poster
A hi point will handle your self defense needs too. But for a few bucks more, you can get something that isn't hideously ugly, works better, and is easier to use. Same concept.
But avast antivirus is free? And I doubt with his usage he would need to upgrade in 2 years... this is like intel vs amd both have fan boys. In the end original poster should just go to best buy and mess with windows and mac to see which he likes more.
