I've never understood why they started the games before the games start. The opening ceremony is really just an "ongoing" ceremony.

The majority of the athletes don't want to sit around waiting for tournament brackets to complete before closing ceremonies and going home.

That would be like making the field of 64 NCAA BB teams go to all the games before they can go home.
