I was removing the dead wood out of an ancient Osage orange. Putting a ranch above my head and part of it fell and hit the back of my hand. Originally I had a small puncture wound. Now it is swollen and pai ful

Good question. Those thorns on the Osage, while small, are almost as bad as the honey locust.

No discoloration, so my hope is it's just irritated from the "toxic" thorn.
