Long day today. Hit the road at 6:30 and traveled up the Cariboo Highway to Prince George BC. Drove 540 miles from Kelowna B.C. to Frasier Lake B.C.Had a problem with the trailer brakes on the car hauler. Ended up rewiring the trailer brakes after a trip to NAPA for parts. Now they work well. Having a multi-meter helped with troubles-hooting.

20240516_141943.jpg Here is the worlds largest gold mining pan in the town of Quesnel B.C.

Drove along many miles of shoreline of the many lakes along the Cariboo highway.

Camped at a Rest Area by a lake near Fraser Lake B.C. 20240516_203008.jpg
    20240516_203001.jpg
It had bear proof trash containers. To open them, you have to reach your hand into the small latch cover on the lid, to unlock it.
20240516_210800.jpgDinner was hamburgers cooked on the small charcoal grill.

After dinner, it was time to clean up. Since camping and rest areas in Canada are very basic, I took a field bath. Used body wipes to clean the important areas. Then brushed my teeth and washed my hair using my water bottle. The outside temp was 46 degrees F. It will get down near 32 tonight. We are cozy in the cargo trailer and all have winter sleeping bags.

My friends are at the halfway point of their trip. Have driven 1,600 miles so far. 1,700 miles to go. I met them after they had 200 mile under their belts. We should arrive at Skilak Lake, AK on Sunday.

By tomorrow, we should be in the Yukon. We have 110 gallons of fuel with us. It will put in the trucks tomorrow. Fuel in the Yukon is $7.00 a gallon.

Just be careful of the humidity if the trailers closed up tight at all.
Better to sleep cold than to wake wet.

    Thanks for sharing all these!!!

Saw over a dozen black bears, one grizz, many caribou and eagles.

Road was smooth in spots and rough over the rest. Lots of bumps and potholes.

Dinner is take out from a local bar.20240517_215145.jpg 20240517_214602.jpg Local beer is pretty good.

Very cool travel log. Thank you. I just found the thread and will be following it. I've been to Alaska twice in the past couple years and plan to head back soon. Driving sounds like the kind of sufferfest I enjoy.

Thanks for taking the time to post.
I think Salmon season will be on in Anchorage. The river outlet is a great place to fish.

Hello. Had a very long day today. My friends and I started out on the road at 05:30 this morning. It started out bumpy and stayed that way for most of the day.
    20240519_095853.jpg
It is hard to tell in this picture but the roads up here are greatly affected by the below zero temps and movement of the ground in the Spring. Makes for some very challenging driving. If you are prone to getting car sick, the roads in the Yukon and interior Alaska will kill you.

By 07:30, we came to the town of Tok and had breakfast at Fast Eddy's. After what we had in Canada, it was wonderful to enjoy some great food in a clean, modern establishment.
    20240519_072215.jpg
We then headed down the Tok cutoff to Glenallen and then the town of Chugiac. There, we got our first showers after six days on the road. My friends then did laundry and loaded up supplies into the trucks and boat.

I ran to the local Three Bears store and bought supplies for my week out here. I also needed some new chest waders and an additional fire extingisher for the cabin. This is what $300 worth of food, batteries, bottled water and supplies looks like in Alaska. 20240519_153325.jpg
After that, we headed south through Anchorage and headed for the Kenai Penninsula. After dropping off some equipment in the town of Sterling, we headed to our final destination of Skilak lake.

My friend has a large Hewes Craft boat. It easily handled the load of all our supplies, three adults, one energetic small boy, two large dogs, two small dogs and a caged up not-impressed cat. Fifteen minutes later, we arrived at Caribou Island and unloaded everything on the dock.

With it being mid May, the water level of the lake was way down. I was able to drive my ATV and tundra trailer down the beach and pick up my supplies. By the 4th of July, the snowmelt will cause the lake to rise to the point where the beach will be under water.

Upon returning to the cabin, I unloaded my supplies and started getting my propane items turned on. The fridge, stove and wall heater were all turned on and ops checked. I also checked the battery for my solar system and fired up the inverter. Everything worked and I was glad, I will be able to make coffee in the morning. By then, it was 11pm and time for bed.

All total, we traveled 3,400 miles over six days. Tomorrow, I will outline some impressions from the trip. I will also give some hints for travel up the ALCAN.

20240520_090234.jpgBeautiful morning in Alaska. This is the view from my second story deck.

The lake was like glass, so a friend on the island ran us over to the upper landing to pick up an ATV and a dozen solar panels.

We safely made the trip back to the island. After we uploaded, I did laundry and worked on a few projects around the cabin.

We can see Mt Redoubt from the shoreline.

Woke up to a cold, windy day on the island. Temp was 42 and winds were 20 mph gusting to 33. Sky was overcast with random showers throughout to day. Mostly did projects all day around the cabin. Also serviced the ATV and made a shopping list.
    20240521_125934.jpg

After lunch, I went down to the beach to take a walk. The wind was howling so hard, it was difficult to keep my eyes open. At the shore, the lake was rolling in whitecaps.

While out on my walk, I discovered that someone but up a little free book exchange on one of the trails.

    20240521_163229.jpg

Also did some reading and drank coffee. Overall, it was very relaxing day.
