20:45 Day 3 After sitting down with Mr Grey and explaining everything since the power went off up to now. That Sarge, Mr Red, has helped you with your fuel problem, and that you were added to the group as Mr Green.

Mr Grey looks at his watch, gets up and walks to the small kitchen area and fires up a coffee pot. Reaches up into one of the cabinets and pulls out two cups and a bottle of black label. Turns to you and motions to see if you want a nip, you nod yes.

Once the coffee starts brewing he walks over to a radio bench which looked a lot like Mr Red’s and starts flipping on some comm equipment. He pulls out a little binder and looks something up, reaches over and turns a transceiver to a different frequency, pulls over a stand mic. “It’s about time” he says to you.

He turns to you and smiles, brings you a cup of hot coffee and sets the bottle of black label on the bench in front of you. Says take a seat and hold tight. He goes over to the radio bench and turns the volume knob up a bit.

21:00 Day 3 The radio came to life and a look of “everything is going to be ok” came across Mr Grey’s face. He motions to you, come on over. The role call starts, Mr Red , is on line - Mr White, is on line - Mr Yellow, is not on line - Mr Blue, is on line - Mr Purple is on line, and when they got to Mr Grey they all applauded when Mr Grey responded and gave a SITREP in code that he must have written because he rattles everything off with no code book. You have no idea what is being said other then they are catching up. At the end of his SITREP Mr Grey announces “Mr Green is with me and will RTB in 30 mikes” so that your family knows that your ok and that you will be home in a half hour. “Grey, over and out”

Mr Grey turns to you and asks, how worried about me were they? You reply, “they sent me over here and I just met Mr Red”. Mr Grey responds, “well you have been on the list for some time.” “List?” you ask. Mr Grey responds, list of possible.. People we thought we could count on, would help or get help from.. Our group has shrunk over the years and we all have wanted to pass on the information and knowledge of the group.

Mr Grey goes to the comm bench and pulls out a very dusty binder and throws it at you. You blow the dust off and look at it. It says, “Mr. Green” on the front. You suddenly feel uneasy, start to look for the way out when he says, “relax, read…” You open the binder and realize that it is a short bio and background about you and your family. You look up at Mr Grey and he says, check the back half, after the tab. As you flip the tab you realize while reading along that the house you live in, the house you bought at acution was previously owned by a member of their group. A Mr. Green… You suddenly feel as if this has all happened for a reason, you and your better half chose the house because of the amount of room it had, the garage and the school district it was in. Never knowing that your house was formerly owned by a member of this group which you are now a part of.

As you look at Mr Grey he pours you a shot of black label and scoots it across the bench to you and as you gladly scoop it up and throw it back not realizing it is is black label and your not a scotch whiskey drinker. Mr Grey grimises as you wince and swallow the harder then your used to drink. You gulp to swallow and then look him dead in the eye and ask, who owned my house before we did?

Mr Grey says, I will gladly explain all of the details another time. For now, get back to your family, and pray for this to all be over soon and get some rest. Check with me in the morning when you get up and he hands you a small walkie talkie. They are aren’t secure, he says, just like the other radio Mr Red gave you but they have a very short range so the boys at the cross roads probably could not pick up the transmission. You don’t have to code everything but be cautious of what you say. We can arrange for a time to “check the apples” (have you come over) and go from there.

You are led out of the bunker the same way you came in and let out the front door, like you came in, carrying your tool bag. As you hear the door shut and the bold latch you leave the porch and walk home.

As you walk down the middle of the street in the pitch black it begins to drizzle a little. You pull your hood up and hunker the 100 yards home.

You arrive home only to have your loving better half greet you with a shotgun at the front door. She smiles as you set down your bag and hand her your coat to hang up. You give her a long hug and she says everything is fine and will make it till morning, the fire in the stove will keep the house warm enough and leads you to bed.

    05:30 Day 4
You are woken by loud thundering noise. A repeating whine and clatter, it’s another convoy rolling down the main road that your road T’s into. You rush to the window but it is still too dark to see, you can only guess what is driving by. It sounds sort of like a tank or armored column. You decide there isn’t anything to do and then realize your cold. You go to the wood stove and stoke up the few remaining coals and decide to get a fire going quick so that you don’t have to fight to start one later.

With a few splinterings and some smaller split logs you finally get a good roaring fire going so that your family doesn’t wake to a cold house.

As you slide back into bed your better half pulls you over to warm up.

08:00 Day 4 The house is awake and busy. You find your better half has already gotten up, fired up the genny, cooled the fridge, pumped the system full of water, heated a water heater full of water, made oatmeal and biscuits and coffee.

You wash your face and get dressed, brush your teeth and put on your boots. As you walk through the kitchen of the remodeled older house you wonder if there are secret passageways and a bunker under your house…

08:15 Day 4 You sit down at the radio just in time for the 08:15 radio call,

Mr Red is on line, Mr White, is not on line, Mr Yellow is on line, Mr Blue is not on line, Mr Purple is on line, Mr Grey is on line and you reply to your Mr Green signifying your on line. With still not being able to communicate in code without pre-writing the message you start coding a message while your oldest records the messages to decode after.

Your message is one of more questions then anything. Your looking for more information.. Your eager to learn and know more.

Mr Red replies but again without having the codes memorized it takes you a minute to decode his reply. It says there should be a meeting of the group, a face to face meeting.

When and where will be determined later in the days conversations but for now, sit tight, take care of your family and check in with Mr Grey.

As your signing off your oldest hands you the decoded messages from the group.

Mr Red is getting ancy to know more about what is going on as well., Mr Yellow says he heard a column drive by his place early this morning as did Mr Purple and Mr Grey. Mr Yellow says that with his NVG’s he saw 4 hummers, two tracked APC’s and one M1A1 drive by in a hurry.

Mr Purple is still having septic issues and is asking for help. The problem is he is the farthest away from the core group. He chose to build his house on higher ground the the rest of the group which puts him out aways from town. The problem is that even though he is on higher ground he is in a low spot on the top of a hill and the water isn’t draining well and his system must have a problem.

Mr Purple has three “others” staying with him, maybe his children or grand children. A discussion about getting him some help is planned for the 12:00 radio call.

About the time you empty your second cup of coffee that your middle child had brought you the first cup is kicking at your bladder ready to get out. As you make your way to the bathroom to relieve your bladder the walkie talkie that Mr Grey gave you cracks to life.. Mr Green, Mr Green, Mr Grey Over.. You hurry to finish and pour some water from the bucket sitting by the toilet in the bowl to flush the mornings deposit you stop long enough to wash up before picking up the radio and replying.

Mr Grey is wanting to have a face to face. Figuring your neighbors no one on the block would probably notice or care that you go pay him a visit.

You reply with an affirmative answer and agree to a 09:15 visit.

    08:45 Day 4
The power comes back on. No radio or TV emergency information, the radio is just static and the TV is that annoying “wake up and go to bed tone” they used to sound when they would sign off at night with the color bars on the screen and that seriously annoying tone. At least that means they are transmitting. The radio stations must not have anyone manning the microphone so to speak.

As you get ready to leave to go visit Mr Grey your youngest brings you the three remaining biscuits left over from breakfast wrapped up in a towel and says would Mr Grey like these? As her question cripples your tough shield you hug her and whisper in her ear, “I am sure he will love them” and thank her for being so thoughtful of others. You stick them in your tool bag and get your stuff ready to walk down the block. Last nights drizzle has turned into a light dusting of snow. It’s 29 degrees and calm but all white outside.

You pull out your cap and gloves and kiss your better half goodbye and remind her to stay alert, cocked / locked and ready to rock. You leave the walkie talkie and instruct her to keep someone on the radio and to carry the walkie whereshe will be able to hear it if it goes off but to charge some spare batteries with the Noon Generator run if your not back by then. You also remind her to leave the blinds closed. If your not back in two hours or something critical happens call on the walkie. You explain that she is “Mrs. Green” and to pay attention to what is said as she realizes what your reminding her of she give you that “ I am no dumby” look and you stop yourself and say “I’ll be back” in your best Arnold voice..

08:55 Day 4 As you walk to the end of your drive you notice the Dr is already at it again, trimming and cutting trees near his house. You think that he must know something you don’t, why else would he be bothering with the wood cutting now, you know he has at least 3 cords of wood already cut and seasoned in his back yard. The last cord you worked together on since it came from trees that were from the property line you share with him.

As you start down the road towards Mr Grey’s house you notice a car coming down your road at you. One of the other neighbors to your South must have some kind of issue.

As car gets closer you realize that it is the old hermit who lives on the cul de sac. He had a pie shaped lot with a rather large outbuilding on the back side which has a private drive off the road to your east. His property bordered the very large non-denominational church down the road. Never seen much of the guy. He would drive by a couple times a week. You figured it was grocery or other menial trips but he never waved, stopped and you have never spoken with him.

His car, a beautiful 1969 plum crazy purple Dodge Dart that always sounded nice as it rumbled down the road now slowed as it approached you. The car stopped next to you and the grumpy stump of a man rolled down the old crank window. He flipped his cigar ash out the window and began to speak to you as he put the half chewed cigar back in his mouth.

"You’re the Jones kid right?" You nodded yes and before you could pull your glove and reach to shake his hand he started rolling up the window and said "better get out of the road, your liable to get ran over.." As he finished rolling up the window he reachs down and puts the tranny in first gear you tried to stop him by waving at him to get his attention. You motioned to him to wait and roll the window back down and he shook his head and said “got to go” and drove off. The car was loping a bit as he stopped at the end of the street, he revved it up to clear her out as he then turned right on the main road. As soon as he rounded the corner you could hear him romp on the old 318, or so it said on the fender badge, it always sounded like it had a much larger displacement pumping under the hood. With spinning tires and the rumble of the exhaust the car shot East out of sight...

“OH NO” you blurt out loud then hushing yourself when you realize it, thinking to yourself he is heading straight for the National Guard check point at the corner.. With the calm morning the sound of his car is the only thing you could hear. You were able to hear him let off, slow down a bit, down shift, then romp it again, just about that time you hear the bone chilling sound of an M16 rattle off a dozen or so rounds in 3-5 round bursts. Then sliding tires and a crash followed by the sputtering stop of the car’s engine. The old coot just tried to run the road block and they shot him… This situation is getting out of hand fast and no one knows what is going on..

You quickly walk, almost jog to Mr Grey’s house wondering if the old man is dead or what...

    09:13 Day 4
You walk up to Mr Grey’s front porch and about the time you set foot on it he opens the door and asks if that was Old Man Koontz from the cul de sac that just drove by? You nod yes as you knock the snow off your boots on Mr Grey’s boot brush.

Mr Grey says “that old timer just got shot up didn’t he?” You reply seems to be the case. These yucks are really taking this travel ban serious.

Mr Grey shivers and tells you to get your fanny inside, he is cold, as you joke with him while walking past and in his front door it feels like you have known the old guy for years and you just met him.

Mr Grey closed and locked the door then says hold on and walks across the living room towards the door just off the kitchen that leads to the back room and presumably the garage. He turns as he is walking through the door way and says hold on, I got to shut off the lights in the shop.

You instinctively follow him just to see what it was you heard the other day. As you walk to the door he is reaching across a beautiful hand carved table leg and flips off a power strip running along the back side of his maple top work bench.

You notice multiple wood working tools, power and hand alike. In the corner is a nice dust collector setup, like the one you would like to have if you had a wood shop. That must have been the noise you heard. You spy a Delta planer, band saw, drill press, lathe and a couple of sanders all lined up against the back wall. A very nice table saw is setup in the center of the garage along the wall to your left with stands and a top extension that could fit a sheet and a half of ply wood.

To the right along the wall past the work bench is a large wall mounted rack of raw wood, large thick raw cut planks at least 2 and a half inches thick then there were some 4 and 6 inch thick pieces that were at least 4 feet long. All the wood looked to be hardwood, oak, hickory, walnut.. big blocks were lined up in front of the rack, 12 inch squares at least 24 inches tall..

Leaning against the garage door was an unfinished oval shaped table top, with all of the grain matching as if the top had been cut from one very large tree. Mr Grey turns and says “welcome to the wood shop”. Turns out the old guy had taught wood shop at the high school until they cut the department.

He smiled and happily explains that working with wood calms him and is his hobby / extra income, well it was anyway. Not sure the McHenry’s will be able to pick up their table now, when I get it finished. He points to the unfinished table. He continued to say he had almost 200 hours in the top three legs he had done and almost 30 hours in the remaining leg up on the bench receiving the final carving and hand fit marble ball for the eagles foot leg. This table although unfinished looked like a work of art.

As Mr Grey cuts off the last power strip he heads back to the doorway where your standing in awe looking at the table when he blurts out, lets go downstairs…

Down to the bunker you go.

Thanks for all the comments and rep, I figured the "what are you going to do" wasn't going as well as I would like so I flipped it to a general story, I have about another two "days" worth already written, it's alot of work but I am glad everyone is enjoying it.

    Hope everyone is well,

    TJ

    PS, more to come soon..

    09:22 Day 4
As you pull the “safe” door shut behind you Mr Grey walks over to the Comm Bench and brings you a packet of paperwork.

He reluctantly hands you the papers, you might as well take this, sorry it isn’t more complete but you just might need it. As you sit on one of the stools positioned next to the work bench in the middle of the area you set the papers down.

As you look through the first couple pages you blurt out “Are you serious?” Mr Grey nods his head in agreement, Yes, you should know about the house you bought.

In the papers are all of the drawings, instructions, specs and information about the bunker under your house. As you look it all over you find yourself wanting to know where the entrances are. As you look up to ask him he is handing you a cup of coffee and says, back of the bathroom closet.. He knows what you want to know… An erie chill comes over your being..

You are shocked. You ask him, what is down there? He answers with a worry some “well….” And you must have looked at him with a very bewildered look as he says, “not as much as there should be.”

Turns out that after the last “Mr Green” died his son in law must have found the entrance and pretty much cleared a lot of the stuff out. Since there were no signs of the actual group, none of them could say anything. Mr Grey goes on to explain that he had seen at least one extra U-Haul trailer worth of stuff leave the property. “They loaded in the dead of night, no one could see what was being taken out.”

You realize that the bunker may not be stocked but it might be a safe harbor for your family is this large amount of unknown crapola has actually started to impact the blades…

Mr Grey stated that you should check everything out when you got home, don’t discuss the bunker with anyone outside of the group and never on any open comm lines..

Then Mr Grey states the obvious. Lets plan this meeting.. It seems that we may not be very smart in trying to go out since obviously those in power don’t want anyone out and about.

You reply that you were trying to get old man Koontz’s attention to tell him not to go in the direction of the road block but he wouldn’t listen…

Mr Grey starts into what ends up being about a 20 minutes rant about old man Koontz, seems they had a beef years back about some sort of Christmas light ordeal and never spoke after that… It had been nearly 15 years.

Once you realize it is about 09:45 and time for a radio call you mention to Mr Grey that maybe a face to face meeting may be ill advised at this particular time and that the needs of one does not out weight the needs of the group. The old guy looks at you with admiration and repeated what had been said earlier, “that’s why you were chosen. You have a level head and think clearly..”

    09:44 Day 4
As Mr Grey fires up the Comm equipment you jot down some notes for him to code out.

Once the roll call is complete, and Mr Grey informs the group that everyone was on and listening he began to explain to them that the meeting is not the right move, every one agreed, he informs them of what presumably happened to Mr Koontz, that the situation needs more intel and that someone will have to collect it.

The group asks you to do some recon of the area east of your street, in the direction of Mr Purple’s house. To see if there is some way to get him some help. From what everyone has said it mist be that his leach field and sand filter is somehow clogged. Since Mr Purple is one of the weakest physically of the group he is calling in help to fix his issue so that his family won’t end up living in a nasty sewage contaminated home.

The call signs off, Mr Grey states across the line that Mr Grean RTB in 30 mikes.. so your wife knows what is going on. The guy really has a clue..

If I wasn't already armed, I would arm myself and wait. Learning how to wait for legit intel is the key, unless a massive shock wave is coming your way. If that happens, oh well, you won't know what hit you any way.

If you survive round one, those who didn't will probably be the lucky ones.
