Curiously it said many police officers were dressed as Santa and other things to blend into the crowd. I wonder if this was done to make the attacker less noticeable

The lone American confirmed to have been injured in a New Year's terror attack on an Istanbul nightclub was saved by his cell phone, his brother told local media Monday.

William Jacob Raak, 35, of Chadds Ford, Pa., was one of an estimated 600 people partying inside the Reina nightclub early on New Year's Day when a gunman entered and opened fire at around 1:15 a.m. The attack, which was claimed by ISIS, killed at least 39 people, many of them foreigners, and injured close to 70 others.

Did he have the new OtterBox Kevlar phone case? This sounds all too familiar.

Video released shows dude shooting up the street as he went inside, taking out a security guy at the door, with an AK-something. A different video must exist of him inside, from which only stills have been released. He may have changed clothes after shooting up the place, then escaping in the chaos.

Was not dressed as Santa. Unless Santa wears dark clothes after Christmas.

Kinda seems like Daesh lone wolves may've hit upon a magic MO: strike fast, get a body count, drop the gun and leave. It isn't strictly necessary to seek martyrdom on their first mission.

Istanbul nightclub shooting: Kyrgyzstan rules out 'suspect' - BBC News

One Kyrgyz guy has apparently been cleared, but info still suggests another "Central Asia" man is a suspect. For background, that usually references the former Soviet central republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. It can also refer to Georgia and Azerbaijan, which are closer to Turkey.

Reporting also suggests that the suspect may have a wife and kids in Turkey.

Haven't seen any follow-up on additional attacks, which is odd.

But, an interestinger development: the investigation has led to some Uighurs.
Turkey nightclub attack: Police 'detain several Uighurs' in raids - BBC News

Those detained are believed to have come from China's Xinjiang region with ties to the attacker, Anadolu says.
    ...
The Uighurs are a Muslim, Turkic-speaking minority in western China, with diaspora communities across central Asia and Turkey.
China has labeled groups from this area as terrorists for a long time.
