Combination of several factors. Cost of production is the highest factor, plain ol recognition and confidence in their purity is second. But they are the standard all others are compared to. Any body can own a car, fewer can own a Cadillac.Still do not get the big premium on American Silver Eagles....currently over $10/oz which is almost half of spot.
Or (back in the 70s) you could own a Cavalier for half the price, still have money left over to trick it out with all the options, and have the same thing. I don't believe in paying for a name. And if things get so bad we have to fall back on "it's backed by the US government," what makes anyone think there will be a government to guarantee it's value? When I checked this morn. looks like oil and dollar were dropping. Metal was followingDang, wild day. Dow went from being down about 600 to finishing up over 827. $1400+ swing!
