We went backcountry hunting and/or fishing in Alaska every year from 1998 to 2007. My preferred gun for bear protection was a Ruger Super Redhawk in .454 casul. I have actually been thinking about selling that gun as I just don't have the time to do those extended backcountry trips any more.

If you talk with any of the guides up there they say the .44 mag is worthless and the .454 is the "minimum" they would carry.

If we are talking about just a great fun and utility gun for camping around here, I would go with a buckmark or woodsman 22lr.

Just no good answer...44mag with bronze solids for the bear or cougar ...large capacity 9mm
with hollow points for the wolves. Six rounds is not enough for a pack of wolves.

Sig 229 in .357 sig would be just fine. Although since overpenetration wouldn't be an issue why camping; a Tokarev in 7.62 x25 with hollowpoints is definitely another option. Rugged, all steel gun with ludicrous ballistic potential.

From the guns I currently have, I would have to say my G20SF with some Underwood 200 Gr XTPs. Should be good to go anywhere in Indiana.

A Glock 20 either the SF or Gen 4 with the longer barrel, ported if I am in bear country, or even other wild animals

A .410 slug to the face would not feel too good. Even to a bear. :rockwoot:

I would not want ti Pi$$ off a bear. 410 slug packs a good jolt but no speed to it. Friend bought a Siaga in .410 and it was a real disappointment to him. I had a snake charmer in .410 and felt the same way about it. Shot a Judge and it is a hoot to shoot but Meh...no big deal.
If it is bear country, nothing less than a .44 Mag and that 500 upstream is a sweet piece as well. I want one.
