Maybe I should make this point clear. I don't have, nor ever had, an MG in my possession, nor do I know of anyone in possession of either a registered or non-registered one. I was asked this question, and not knowing the answer, decided to investigate.
Because it is tax information, the only person that can check is the estate attorney or an heir if no estate exists (with proof of death). If it is not registered ATF will expect to be forfeited.
The only person it can be transfered to after a registree's death is an heir (tax free) or it can be legally sold as part of the estate (taxed).
I have seen guns transfer to heirs up to 8 years after the registered owners death.
