England did not abolish slavery until 1833. The United States did so approximately 30 years later.
So are we going to get upset about all the great men in history who owned slaves or indentured servants? American Indians owned slaves. It took awhile but eventually lawful ownership of a human being was done away with.
Nowadays the new form of slavery is called welfare.
