Cannot go wrong with a good 22 for a first handgun. Plenty of good ones to be had. Ruger MII and MIII series, SR22, Browning Buckmarks, Walther P22 and quite a few others sitting around that $300 mark. A 22 is good for a lifetime of plinking and a great gun to use to introduce others into shooting.
