Some believe state means a territory. I think it means a state of being.I always took it the other way around...
The "well regulated militia", I took that as back then, that WAS the then "national guard" that could be called up by the government, (as it was for the revolutionary war) to defend the nation. However, since it was to be controlled by the government, "the right of the people to keep and bare arms" was the check to keep the government from turning bad.
As the militia was "necessary for the security of a free state"... our right "should not be infringed"... should the state go rouge.
Either way, it's something they don't teach.
Adopted at birth?
Could be all thee above...I think it means the nation. The founders would indeed have meant the States (capital S) individually and the nation (lower case n) as a whole.

Also, by well regulated they meant properly functioning; like a well regulated clock keeping proper time...not well legislated.

First grand dragon, at least. Oh, and he was the commander of the Fort Pillow Massacre, where 200+ unarmed, surrendering Union soldiers were killed. Most of them were black, which does explain Forrest's actions. A truly despicable "man".Isn’t that the guy that started the KKK?
