She fired, missed, and the guy sat down and waited for police. He's saying a starter pistol would have had the same affect. The noise and the sight of the gun is what stopped him, the caliber was irrelevant in this instance.

Funny how a miss with any caliber proves anything about its effectiveness.

All that said, my grandmother used a .22 revolver to defend herself. She didn't have to fire a shot, the fellow knew she wasn't bluffing when she told him if his foot hit the top step he was dead. What does that say about the .22? Nothing. What does that, and this article, say about mindset and refusing to be a victim? Plenty.

Well, she wasn't using a starter pistol, or a nerf gun and a firecracker. Neither of which, by the way, sound like an actual gun shot. There is no way of knowing that a starter pistol would've had the same effect, and I'm betting that it wouldn't have. :dunno:

    Props to your grandmother! :+1:

A .22lr nearly killed Reagan, permanently disabled James Brady, and wounded at least one Secret Service Agent. All from a cheap .22 revolver, fired in under 1.7 seconds.

In the article, grandma didn't even hit her target. The gun went bang and the BG surrendered. How in heavens name can this story be a testament to the effectiveness of a .22 as a self defense round? She used the noise of the round !!!!!

Although a larger caliber is preferable, a 22LR is lethal -- especially if it is hollow point and hits the right spot. Ever been hit by one?

Something to take into consideration is front plate area. Front plate area for a 45 is 0.1647 and for a 22 it is 0.0394. Using Hornady Critical Duty Ammo .45 + P 22gr and Federal 22LR 36gr the ft lb/sq in for the 45 is 2811 and for the 22 is 3197. This gives the 22 better initial penetration than a 45 but of course mass has a lot to do with the rest of the travel.

Using a more powerful 22 like the 22 TCM will punch through 3/16 steel where a 45 won't.
