Is there a difference between using an 18650 battery vs. (2) CR123's ? I assume it's the mAH rating ?

Correct. The. 18650 typically has a higher capacity. They are also typically rechargeable. So you end up with a longer run time and a lot if re-uses.

Keep in mind it's a bigger cell, so your light has to be built to take it.

This is more true when you talk about a AA vs a 14500. AA have 1.5v, a 14500 has 4v. So the 14500 hits the LED harder, driving more brightness.

But it is all about the chip driving the LED.

The Fenix PD35 says it hits 850 when using the 18650. I assume this means it is reduced when using the (2) CR 123.

If this is, in fact, true I need to get an 18650.

I'm going to defer to theledwarehouse on this.

The PD35 is regulated, meaning that the LED uses the same voltage no matter what battery you put in it. In other words, the brightness isn't affected between a 18650 or two CR123a's.

You do gain runtime with a 18650 because it has more capacity vs the CR123a'a.

OK, thanks for clearing that up. The PD35 box is kind of misleading where it says the light develops 850 lumens from a 18650 battery. That would seem to indicate that it doesn't develop the same light output from the 123's.

Either way, I'm really happy with the light.

Both have the same LED. The PD35 has a rear switch and a side button and the high mode isn't a burst mode.

the E35 Ultimate is a little more stripped down. No rear switch, just the side switch. It's less tactical if you will.
