For 9mm, I have the Marlin Camp Carbine. No longer made, but available for less than 1000. I know there's several tactical styles, but I don't know a lot about those.
If the MPX is out of your price range, I would pick up the Scorpion from CZ. That would be my next choice. There are some great social media forums/groups and decent aftermarket support.
Marlin 1894 in .357mag or.44mag. The good JM-stampted ones are going at $750-850. Rossis are cheaper, but not as well made. Uberti and Cimarron make good ones, too, but they are expensive.
I have a Just Right Carbine, it has been a fun, reliable gun. I have heard good things about the Marlin mentioned above, I wouldn't mind getting one some day.
Sub2000? I have other PCC's that I like better, but they're more expensive. For the price, the Sub2000 can be a fun shooter. Mine is 9mm for Glock 17, but I have a friend with one in .40 and he really likes his.
I have Ar9 Colt pattern, AR9 Glock pattern, CZ scorpion Rifle, CZ Scorpion SBR, Ruger PC9 and the Ruger PCC. They are all fun to shoot but love my Scorpions the most.
From the other PCC thread:
I have tried and owned the following:
Ruger PC9 (old style) - heavy, but sturdy, reliable, eats anything, uses my Ruger P-series mags, accurate enough. Get the ghost ring sight model if possible.
HiPoint - cheap, hard to work on, but more accurate than it has any right to be, limited mag choice
Sub 2000 (older model) - adapted Ruger P-series mags to fit (takes S&W), light, folds small, difficult cheek weld, takes some getting used to
Calico - what's not to like with 50 and 100 round mags? Only kept the newest one - the older ones were unreliable
Scorpion is cool. It does seem like after guys get done with upgrades though they will have about as much money in them as a Sig, but the MPX's also went up and I doubt that's the case anymore. If you could spend a touch more one of the Zenith offerings would be cool too. I see CZ as you go to on that budget though!
