Feeling like I wasted time on my shotgun this year now. Planning ahead... I have a Remington 7600 pump 30-06 and a Browning Abolt II in 300 WSM. I think I'd like semi auto, but if you can't do it with one round of those calibers, then probably better go back to the range? Anyhow, I was wondering if I'd be happier equipping a BAR in a more white tail appropriate caliber instead? Anyone that can compare a BAR to a bolt gun? Also, I keep reading that 300 and 30-06 are too much for white tail and you have too many problems with recoil. Those rifles don't kick more than my 12ga with slugs. I'll take flatter shooting over less recoil in my thinking. Maybe just hunt with the 300?

For all those saying they will use a Mosin, Enfield, Masuer, etc, are you going to use aftermarket sights? Maybe my 50yo eyes are the problem.

I will be using my stock sights on my Mosin. Where I hunt, all my shots are under 100 yards and I have shot good groups at this distance with the stock sights.

300 and 30-06 are good for deer. 30-06 is a popular as the 30/30 back in PA. The kick feels worse with a 12 ga in my opinion. I shoot a 300 win mag back in pa and remember that I never noticed the recoil or noise when I shot a couple of deer. Probably too much adrenaline.

The 30-06 completely depends on the rifle. I've shot a 1903a3 and a sporstarized 1903 and neither of them were anywhere near as bad as a 12ga slug out of a mossberg 500. The 30/30 feels just like shooting 223 from an AR to me.

No, I'm no cowboy or country music fan either, but to each their own.
On the other hand I do like a light, good handling lever gun. And the .30-30 is a good close range thumper.

Back to the magazine capacity subject, I'm curious to see how that plays out.
I hope that people who would like to hunt with an M1A, a Hakim ect can do so.

magazine capacity, I once had a guy tell me with a shotgun I could not have more than 3 slugs in the gun. Someone didn't read the regulations. last week I even had a guy at work tell me I can not hunt with my AR-15 in 450 bushmaster because it is a assault weapon and they are illegal to hunt with, and this guy hunts too.
I don't see where capacity really matters, other than the possibility of a trigger happy hunter, but if it is a magazine fed rifle, you can drop one and insert another fairly quickly too, so back to my original thought that capacity doesn't matter.

The IT boys for the NRC are working on setting up their site to receive public input on this proposal. Hopefully it will be done this week. When it is I'll post it so everyone can give their input - pro and con..
