Every single speaker at CPAC does the same thing. Romney paid all travel and room expenses for his crowd. So your argument doesn't hold water.
Anyway, since this is becoming a liberty bashing thread let me chime in with my 2 cents.
'If you analyze it I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism. I think conservatism is really a misnomer just as liberalism is a misnomer for the liberals–if we were back in the days of the Revolution, so-called conservatives today would be the Liberals and the liberals would be the Tories. The basis of conservatism is a desire for less government interference or less centralized authority or more individual freedom and this is a pretty general description also of what libertarianism is.' You know who said that? The champion of a large sector of the greater conservative movement did--none other than Ronald flippin' Reagan. And he was absolutely correct about that statement. The real basis of modern conservatism is that of classical liberalism or libertarianism, however in recent generations conservatism has been co-opted by disenfranchised progressive socialists. That's right, what makes up the neo-conservitism movement championed by Republicans like George W. Bush, his father alike, Dick Cheney, Paul Wolfowitz and most of the Republican leaders who have steered the Conservative debate for generations have all been adherents to neoconservative doctrine.
You want to know the problem with neoconservatism? Well, for starters its basic philosophical roots are that of socialism. Yes, neoconservatism is a socialist doctrine. Two of the most influential people in its philosophy were Leo Strauss and Leon Trotsky and yet neoconservatives despise communism without ever knowing their own movement was influenced by the writings of V.I. Lenin's closest comrade turned rival. What's even worse is that neoconservatism preaches an ideology of blind nationalism, confuses the population to the difference between defensive military spending and aggressive military conquest, adopts forms of corporatism (a fascist trait of the merging of state and corporation), and just like its communism brother--will lead to the economic destruction of any society that adopts its tenets.
What the libertarians, Constitutionalists, Classical Liberals or whatever variation of ethos preach are limited government, non-intervention, fiscal responsibility, business partnerships with foreign nations but warn against the consequences of permanent alliances. Basically they want a small government that keeps a military able to protect its sovereignty and legal structure to protect the individual rights granted to us by our creator so that each individual may seek out and create their own destinies so much as their ability and drive may allow.
I for one do not adhere to socialism in any of its forms whether it be communism, fascism, or the self denial closet socialism of the neoconservative movement. I think classical liberalism gave us a good basis of how to govern ourselves; it allows each individual the right to pursue the highest levels of freedom, peace, and prosperity.
Only in this great country can two opposing groups exist and be allowed freedom of expression.
Was that supposed to be in purple?
Mitt Romney: supporter of socialized medicine and gun control. A Big Government socialist loser like Romney regularly shows popularity at CPAC -- and nobody bats an eye.
But a guy like Ron Paul, who won't put his name on anything unless it is overwhelmingly constitutional, shows popularity at CPAC -- and it must be election fraud! Real Republicans wouldn't dare support a constitutionalist!
