The main culprit is the idea that previous generations could mortgage the future, and that using the Federal government to do so, was a good idea.

Congress wrecked the economy with a whole bunch of things all added together. You can't just point at one or two programs. They are all part of our eventual collapse. And it all lies at the feet of Congress, and by extension the people who keep voting for them.

The American people are voting for it, and are the ones who are ultimately responsible.

No... the fiat currency the Fed/Congress created is what is crashing this economy. Our current economy was built with counterfeit currency!

I am completely against a government managed social security program. The Socialists should have never started it. The problem we face with social security is that LBJ decided to start tapping that money away from the purpose it was collected for to fund the "great society". Years and years of failed government giveaway programs that are still with us today, not returning any productive taxpayers to society. Of course they replaced the money that was misappropriated with unsecured IOU's. As taxpayers today, we owe payments on those IOU's AND have to figure a way to fund all the population that does not take care of themselves. Plus interest on loans.

I maxed out my Social security contributions for over 1/2 the years of my life. I always paid in. I pay double because I am self employed in addition to having short term conventional employment. 39 years paying into the fund mightily only to have it be spent on those who choose to be unproductive. They have already moved the age of qualification up, now they are going to move it again. ie: the government did such a responsible job with the program, that they have to make sure I die before I am old enough to qualify so that we are "even". If my only hope was in this world, I would be a sad man indeed.

I really do not even want to approach the medicare problem, but once again, The government put their hands into something that was somewhat working and created a monster that does not work.

Did Social Security and Medicare crash the economy? No, irresponsible leaders who made themselves rich selling socialist ideas to an ignorant population crashed the economy. For eighty years, more and more people have been eating a free lunch, we are the ones who are going to pick up the tab.

I have to agree. Social Security was never meant to be a givaway to the unproductive. originally it was locked and congress was not able to touch it but they saw that piggy bank and just changed the rules so they could get their sticky fingers in it. Now they have robbed it for no good reason except their uncontrolled spending.
And my Social Security is NOT and entitlement...it's my money that I put into it and I would have a lot more if they had kept their hands off it !

The working public paid into Social Security and the government "borrowed" funds from it to bolster other programs. That money should never have been touched for anything but what it was designed for. The reason the economy is crashing is because the government is spending more than they are taking in and then trying to get more money from it's citizens. STOP all foreign aid, especially to countries that hate us, bring our troops home, stop the flood of illegals into the country and stop spending money on wasteful programs. :twocents:

What happened to SS is that with a fair lawyer anyone can start drawing funds from it, your kid has ADD you can get $600.00 + every month even if you never paid in a dime, just one example.

This.If we still used a constitutional currency none of the current situation would exist, the Federal government would be 1/10 the current size.

The creation of the Federal reserve, the debt based fiat currency it issues, and the inflation created to enable the interest payments on said debt have directly led to most of our problems.
With out the Federal Reserve the USA would have a balanced budget, especially currently with the FED being the largest purchaser of US Treasury notes.Under a constitutional currency it is very hard to run more than a few years of deficits. When we had a constitutional currency we did have years of deficits, but never more than 9 years before we where back into positive territory and only once did we go back into deficits with out paying off previous debt.
