I'm afraid Wells was right about the future but mearly got the year wrong.
Just to keep the record straight, "Nineteen Eighty-Four" was written by George Orwell (born Eric Blair), not Herbert George Wells.

Global average temperatures have been rising since at least 18,000 years ago. Depending on the geologic text you wish to reference, 25,000 to 18,000 years ago was the peak of the Wisconsinan Ice Age and the future location of Indianapolis had an ice sheet a mile thick covering it at that time. That ice sheet was completely melted away by 10,000 years ago. Things have been steadily warming ever since, punctuated by shorter and less extreme periods of warming and cooling. In Earth's history, many ice ages have come and gone. Interglacial warm periods have come and gone, including a couple where there was no ice anywhere on Earth. Mini ice ages and warm periods have come and gone. All this change happened without ANY influence from human activity, yet I'm supposed to believe that "this time it's different"? The idea of anthropogenic (human caused) climate change is absurd once you understand geologic history. Dive into the geochemistry and geophysics and things get even better. When Mt. Pinatubo erupted in the Philippines in 1991, that single eruption released more climate altering chemicals and particulate into the atmosphere in one shot than all of mankind has since the Industrial Revolution. I will point out that this massive dump into the atmosphere had only minor, short-lived and well-documented effects. Spread out a smaller amount over a large stretch of time (all human releases since the Industrial Revolution) and the effect is negligible - a drop in an ocean. In addition to our minor contribution, volcanoes erupt every day all over the globe and yet even when it's all combined, the effects of atmospheric chemistry get completely overshadowed by changes in solar output and variations in the Earth's orbit (which are the real and perfectly natural drivers of climate change). The bottom line is that human activity or lack of activity can't meaningfully change the climate. Climate change has happened throughout the history of the Earth and it will continue to change no matter what we do or don't do - we wouldn't be able to change it one way or the other even if we wanted to. The word "hubris" comes to mind.
THey don't care. This isn't about the environment

your right....it's about control....
Fixed it for you, the profit is a very attractive side benefit of pushing the man made climate change BS but the real goal is more control.
but just look at all the "green stuff" you can buy.........before the green movement none of that green stuff was around...
The "next thing" I recall everyone taking about was the Segway. Going to change everything!!!
for the city tour guys and mall cops I guess

Renewable energy sounds noble and good, but there won't be any new energy sources that can't be monetized. There won't be a free source of energy developed by people spending billions of other people's money do develop it. It will be a source of profit; that's what drives it. Of course the global warming scare is embellished to shame people into agreeing to pour other people's money into it. Yes, world leaders go along with it for political power. But it is most certainly a crony power whose basis is sucking the wealth frome the masses.

I remember back around 2006/7 there were a lot of discussions about the next big thing, the next big innovation that revolutionizes the way we live, and drives our economy. The next thing with the impact of inventing the wheel, or harnessing electricity, the invention of the internal combustion engine, flight, through the different ages on up to the industrial and information ages. So what's the next big thing?
A lot of people thought it would be a breakthrough in renewable energy. But what's the motivation for that? The biggest instigator for developing renewable energy now, is a dubious story that without it we will all die.

And, BTW, "green" isn't the next big thing. The next big thing is social media. Yes. For the first time in human development, the next big thing is regressive. If you don't like it, unfriend me *****. That's how it works.
