The issue is weather we treat 2 * X the same as 2 * (X). There is no strict rule, unfortunately.
The CORRECT way to write the problem is either:
8÷2 * (2+2)
or
8 / (2(2+2))
Otherwise, it is open to interpretation, based on how you were taught.
Yeah, my first thought was 1, but I programmed it into a calculator and it does indeed come out to 16.8÷2(2+2)
8 / 2(4)
8 / 2 * 4
4 * 4
16

Exponents
Multiplication/division (left to right)
Addition/Subtraction (left to right)
I suspect the missing multiplication sign between the 2 and the (2+2) throws some folks.
BTW: MS Excel says 8/2*(2+2) = 16
Lol, the answer is and always has been 16. This has nothing to do with common core, and is not “new math”. You guys either don’t remember order of operations correctly, of you never really understood it.

Depends on who you caddy for and the tip. Sometimes subtraction is involved.I would suggest that the person who designed this question would serve humanity better as a golf caddy. They only need to deal with addition.
