Can anyone please confirm, if its lawful to leave your pistol in your car at the airport? Say if your just going in to greet someone who is landing?
Indy airport is a no carry zone. Airports can decide if their unsecured side of the airport is a carry side or the whole airport is non-carry. Airports come under Fed Law and FFA rules. I called and asked as the wife is in and out for work 1-2 times a month. You can leave a gun in a car and be ok. Gun inside of terminal can get you a stay in the gray bar hotel. Call and ask.
The FAA has no regulations prohibiting firearms in the unsecured areas of the airport. IC is very clear in only making the secure areas of the airport off limits. This goes back to the trespass issue. If asked to leave you must go. Until then you are good to go.
Not exactly true. If the terminal area also has access to a colocated air traffic control tower then you may not carry a firearm past any marked doors. (Most are locked and pass key or PID Scanner equipped). But generally speaking the FAA has zero jurisdiction on the rest of the airport terminal area. The jurisdiction picks up outside in the airfield area, planes, etc. Indy terminal does NOT have a colacted air traffic control tower since the tower is on the southwest side of the airport. How in the heck do I know? I work for the FAA.
Some good information here. Always a good idea if you have to leave your handgun in your auto, to make sure it is unloaded and locked.
