I think the finger grooves are all spaced the same, there is just more pinky room on the full sized frame. The slightly increased sight radius is a more likely reason some people find the 17 easier to shoot well. It's the same reason the competition guys use the 34 or 17L.
The 26 is a sub-compact and the 19 is a compact. Prob meant can't go smaller than a sub.I'm tall and have big hands, yet I feel I shoot the compact G26 or M&P9C better than larger guns. I think it is the shorter sight radius that makes them faster to point and aim, and easier to get the sights aligned. No pinky required. Maybe at long distances the longer barrel would start to shine, but for a defensive CC pistol I'm sold on the compacts. I will say that since my hands are large, I can't go any smaller than a compact, the grip and trigger become a mess if I go smaller.
