IMHO the best bug out is something like a older model (98 or older) Chevy p/u truck extended cab with a camper shell and 4X4 (V8)....

-it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb (people will look at mil style vehicles hard)
-if it breaks down parts are EVERYWHERE and cheap
    -it's built very well (I mean come on, it's a 350 with either a turbo 350, 700r4, 4l60, 4l60E behind it) and typically dependable
-you can get 4-6 people in th cab if need be
-you can either store a lot of stuff in the bed under the shell or sleep in it
-good 4X4 to go where or through a lot of crap and has the weight to push through baracades
-if you tune them right you can get 17-18 mpg out of them and install 2nd fuel tank
-they have a decent towing capacity if needed

Main thing for me is not "looking" suspicious or like a have a lot of stuff...that's what will get you in trouble IMHO. In a SHTF if people see nice things or just stuff they need someone will be brave/stupid enough to try and take them, so staying low key is vital to me.

OP I see you are from Noblesville. Let's pretend we have to bug out. Chicago is hit and countless people are headed south. Unless you are luckily out of town when it happens you are screwed just like me if you plan to drive a vehicle out of the Indy area.

Vehicle till you can't go any further. Motorcyle or bicycle after that. Then you can rely on your shoes or boots :)

I want a 7.3 L Powerstroke 4x4 , they run forever, can run on anything, and can get 20+ mpg. Plus I just love them anyways.

What's the purpose of the vehicle? To get you to your Bol and then camp out? A bicycle is a must if you ask me and some mountain biking experience and a bicycle trailer

That F550 front axle is going to have the a bolt pattern that doesn't match the rear and 4.88 gears. I bet the top speed and MPG would be pretty horrible. And that tranny isn't going to live long behind the Cummins and with 4 gears, your useful powerband is going to be pretty crappy.

I do like the idea of a van, though!

Most of your idea already exists, though....in an Excursion with a 7.3.

I've got a late 70s GMC 3/4 ton. It was my daily driver for ever until too many kids and not enough cab space. I still have it as a farm truck, I guess if I needed to get anywhere that'd be it. Its rusted and sure doesn't say "I've got a bunch of stuff in here". No electronics to worry about, easy to work on, etc.

Bad part is it gets about 12mpg and its geared so low that I usually only do 65 on the highway.

That M1009 looks great. It looks like the perfect blend of cargo/off road capability. I've been thinking about the M1009 or M1008 series vehicles. I had a Jeep that I thought would be great, but the small fuel tank and 12mpg gave me about a 150 mile range. Plus, it could not really carry anything except the 4 of us, so I sold it and am on the hunt now. I like the M1009 since it seems to fit what I need pretty well. For me, I am looking for something that will get into the woods if need be while carrying 4 adults and a fair amount of supplies while towing a small military style trailer.

You'll have a hard time finding one through Government Surplus, since most of them were disposed of when HMMVs had been produced in enough quantities to issue throughout the military. There are some hobbyist sites where you might be able to pick one up.

I hear ya. I lucked into a 2002 Ford Excursion 4x4 with the 7.3 L Powerstroke engine this summer. Had just shy of 200k miles on it. And with it all stock and unchipped (so far) I am getting 16 mpg mixed highway and city.
