Not Everything Needs a Bayonet!
What all the better to keep Shaka Zulu and his many heathens away.This Martini Henry wears an 1887 pattern bayonet which is different from most. The bayonet mounts the blade on the side and is horizontal rather than most bayonets which are vertical. It also has both sides with full length cutting edges much like swords. I guess the idea was to slash side to side rather than down or perhaps it was thought to pierce ribs easier without catching on them. The Martini Henry is a long rifle, and with this bayonet it's more like a spear.
