All the more reason for universal conscription. Allow them to choose Branch. If they pass Basic let them choose advanced training. If they can not pass Basic send them to the fat farm, get them in shape, back to basic and on to advanced training.

All of this within the needs of the military. All options will not always be available.

I'd be curious to know the numbers...

Hmm in a nation of 350 million people, how much would it cost to have mandatory military service?

That's giving free jobs to everyone between 18 and, I think 26, for 2 years, and providing their training, equipment, and living expenses. As well as caring for them for life after the fact.

That privileges and immunities thing is a double edged sword, ain't it?

Yep, but it's a requirement when you have a VOLUNTARY military. It would likely need abolished if we moved to compulsory service. Unless a far smarter man than myself can tell me how socialism is impossible, but employing everyone 18-26 and providing them with lifetime benefits is somehow different.

I seem to hold both views simultaneously. I hate our system of conscription but wouldn't mind being born in Switzerland and having mandatory military training (as well as a state issued Sig Sauer rifle for life).
I don't mind being trained to defend my country in preparation for the worst case scenario. The idea that you could be forced to fight for some other countries sovereignty or in defense of vague 'national interests' is despicable.
Why don't we get serious about the idea of a national militia? Everyone gets some basic training, rifle drill at the parade ground every once and again, and they can only be activated within the territory of the United States? Wouldn't have to have expensive compulsory service, wouldn't worry about dying in some third world hellhole, and our nation's defense is far more formidable.

Of course for this to work you'd have to have everyone on board thinking that defending from foreign invaders is a good idea. Plenty of people I've met who would welcome them with open arms, lest we be intolerant or hateful.

Heck, we could even make a voluntary militia. If we could get 5 million volunteers to sign up for this training that would be a formidable counter force to attack. That's over twice the size of China's standing army.

I agree completely. I'd like to get that kind of training without the risk of ending up in Iran or Syria or Iraq.

Personally, I don't think a professional American-sized military can coexist with universal conscription As Robert Heinlein famously had his Vietnam Vet Hero "Oscar" Gordon say in "Glory Road": "After you spend years and years beating the patriotism out of a boy don't expect him to stand up and cheer when he gets a letter titled "Greetings." "

Universal conscription implies a willingness to put the needs of one's country/society before one's own needs/wants, if only for a short period of time. Perhaps Heinlein's society from "Starship Troopers" - where the only way one could become a "citizen" and have the right to vote was to perform a "term of service" to his/her society. Jobs would be nasty, dangerous, tedious, or a combination of all three. Frankly, I don't see our society at present rearing the kind of children who would be inclined to place their nation's needs ahead of their own, thereby making "universal conscription" a bad joke.

I know quite a few men that wouldn't be cut out for combat.....Or do you forget how fat and lazy most of our country is? I also know quite a few cross fit women that would wipe the floor with most men.

Put them in the draft. Keep the hurdles the same. Lots of women AND men won't make the cut. Those who don't clear the pass/fail criteria for combat can sweep ship decks.

Keeping the hurdles the same...there's the issue, they won't. The misadministration wants them cleared for all combat jobs therefore there must be successes and the standards will change. Political correctness will be served and people will die in combat because chick X will be unable to fulfill the task.

Hey, I tried to start that very thing here in IN but the idea was pretty seriously poo-pooed right here on INGO when I came looking for support.

They're too busy fretting about man-spreading.

LOL...I have no idea what this "man-spreading" is! I asked IndyJohn and he raised his eyebrows at me like it was alarming...

Are women (and I'm mass generalizing) as strong as men? Nope, not the way the big guy created us. Can some women hold their own, sure. Should they all be in combat as a general blanket statement? LOL, only if you're crazy.

When the hell are the morons currently running our military going to come to the realization that the purpose of a military is to kill people and break things, not conform itself to being just another jobs program so that the social justice warriors can check off a box?
