I think either would suffice.
I have no experience with the Scout model, but I do own a few CVA products and I've been more than just pleased with their function.
H&R are proven single-shot rifles/shotguns. Many deer taken with them.
I am very impressed with the 44 Mag Handi. I handload so I was able to fine tune a load that gave me clover leafs at 50 yards utilizing a 300 grain xtp. This has been very effective even with less than optimal shot placement. Even with my heavy handloads it is not difficult to handle the recoil.
I bought the CVA Scout in stainless and put a 1x4 Leupold scope on it last year. Shoots 2" groups at 100 yards with WWB JSP. I have not hunted with it but I loaned it to a friend last season while I was hunting out west and he dropped two does and buck in the span of 15 minutes using WWB JSP. Overall impressions of gun are good with respect to quality and function considering price point. Someone on INGO did a write up on the Scout which influenced my decission to purchase. Bottom line: if I were looking again I would make the same choice and buy the Scout.
I'm with Willie. The ruger 44 carbine is one of the best little guns you buy find in a 44. Hunted with one many times and always liked the gun. It's really hard to tell it from a 10/22 by looks, feel or weight. The bang part is different though. They are getting tough to find now and a bit pricey but in my opinion worth it.
