I built a 358BFG this summer on a Savage M11 action. Any of the WSM/WSSM family of cartridges will work for a base gun. I have reloaded and tinkered a little with guns for years, but this was my 1st rebarrelling job. It has been an absolutely great time. I got the barrel from Fireball168. I recommend finding a donor Savage and doing it yourself. It's really not that hard.
Mine started out as a 270WSM that someone had painted camo. I got it used at Whittakers in Owensboro, KY. $379 with a Nikon 3-9X scope. I couldn't be happier with the results. I am getting around 1 inch at 100 with anything that I run through it. My pet load for now is a 200 grain Hornady FTX moving just under 2600fps.
i built one a few years ago on a savage model 11. very easy rebarrel job. buy a barrel from fireball. great guy to deal with. mine will put 3 225 grain sierra game kings in an inch at 100 yards. 2400fps my son just took 2 deer with it sunday.
We've built a few of these. I like the 70 WSSM action for this application, and I hunt with one identical to the one in the link. That said any rifle chambered in a WSSM or WSM cartrige will serve the purpose.
