    Congrats!

Nothing like scoring your first! How'd the .223 do in terms of "stopping power" by way of how far did he run after the shot? A lot of people knock the .223, but a well placed shot should be pretty effective.

He ran about ten yards down a ridge and then fell over into the top of the valley. I guess it stopped him pretty good, but I'll never shoot with .223 again if I can help it. There was no impact blood or hair and if I hadn't heard him fall over that ridge, I'm not sure I would have found a trail. The only blood I saw was where it pooled under him.

Excellent harvest Que. I'll be in VA next weekend and week of Thanksgiving for my annual VA deer hunt.

They are everywhere, but I've still not seen any bigger bucks around here. I'm sure they are just outsmarting me, though.

    opening morning

Dropped this boy 3 hours into opening morning. He came in trotting and I was able to get him stopped but he was facing away from me. But then he turned and trotted back the same way he came from. I stopped him again about 10 yards later and put a double lunger on him! he went about 15 yards and dropped dead!

    public land - 8 point - 4 y.o. - 206 dressed.

He was a big boy and I dragged him out on my deer cart 1 mile by myself. I didn't gut him until I got him home because of where I was going to be dragging him. couple of nice guys in the parking lot helped me get him loaded onto the cargo carrier of my explorer.

    What bullet type?

    Very curious about this myself.

In Kentucky I've used an 80gr Amax (223AI bolt gun) and a 77gr Nosler CC (18" SPR) on whitetail, and while I beaned up, the aftermath made me confident either bullet would be highly effective with a boiler room shot.

Well, it was a 55 grain soft point. It would not have been my first choice, but it was all I could find. I didn't put the 6-P's into effect, but I will be better prepared next time.

I shot this one opening morning at 40 yards with my 12 guage with a shot barrel and Imp. Cyl. choke. Only ran about 30 yards. 9 points counting the broken eye guard which is still 2 inches long 17 inch spread and weighed 190lbs.

My dad shot this one out of my same stand on Sunday morning, 8 points, 17 inch spread, 195lbs.

After I get two does, I want to wait for something like this! Great looking deers.

    Congrats to everyone!

I still haven't had a shot opportunity but at least it was nice and peaceful and pleasant out there this morning. I took the day off of work, and presumably the trigger-happy hunters next door are busy.

I might go out early this afternoon because I'm guessing some of them will be around after work at 3 or so.

The lack of deer on our property this year is discouraging, but I'll keep trying. I'm sure I could have better prepping and hunting skills but nonetheless we see less deer every year.

Nice bucks and good shots to both you and your Father.

Shot this fellow about 9:45am Saturday morning with my Knight .50 muzzleloader. He was chasing a doe and came in behind me and then turned around and started trotting back uphill. Single shot to the upper spine dropped him in his tracks.

Shot this one Sunday. First saw him Saturday when he ran in front of me due to 2 dogs, Great Dane and a Boxer.

    Que, nice deer, congrats!

den57, Hookeye, wow! I'm in love with the .35 caliber. I wonder, are you guys using the .35 Rem experiencing the "red jello soup" on lung shots like I am with the WSSM?

The shot was a double lung. The near lung was half gone and the far lung was jello. The 200 grain Remington Core-lokt was a pass through. The buck mule kicked at the shot, did a 5 second, half circle dash, hooked his antlers in a grape vine and flipped himself up in the air and landed on his back and he was done. The more I shoot this .35 Remington, the more I like it.

Last year was the first year I had ever hunted and didn't see anything. This year I went out and saw 3. First one I didn't have a shot, second one I missed, and the third I got. Shot him at 17 yards with a single shot 12ga. Very happy for my first deer!
