We have dropped Coyote with this round. I understand it is the round of choice for deer poaching but that is just rumor. I do not hunt deer. Would not know what to do with one if I shot it.
.17 is a super round for Varmints and fuzzy tail.
I want to try one of those, but the ammo is so expensive. I bet I could reload it cheap, since it takes hardly any powder.
17 HMR is a rim fire. Can't be reloaded.
Whoops, thinking of the Hornet I guess. I want a center fire one for reloading. Either way, I'm sure ammo is harder to find than 22lr--except maybe during this shortage.
All,
After last season hunitng with my 10/22 ruger I can tell you this year I used my Savage 17 HMR and I can tell you thereis no equal for fuzzy tail weapons. Head and neck shots all day long and neck shots were only due to my breathing. Accutrigger is great.
I've shot groundhogs with 17HMR and the results were devastating to say the least. There was not much left.
I'm assuming by "fuzzy tails" you mean squirrels?? In that case I suspect there would not be anything left. So if you are hunting them to eat, you might want to stick with your 10/22.
I call b/s. unless you were standing ON the groundhog when you shot him, or he was a little tiny one. I mostly get an entrance and no exit at 75 yds and beyond on groundhogs with the 17 gr pills. It is a little overkill on squirrels you intend to eat but headshots do make for dead edible squirrels. I really prefer the mach2 later in the season when u can see farther. Right now .22 shorts are usually plenty. Subsonic in the SemiAuto guns I have.

Cases shouldn't be hard to find, they are laying all over the ground at the range. What powder & how much do you use to reload?Walmart in Lebanon frequently has 17HMR in stock but rarely will you see any .22LR.
You can reload rimfire if you have the desire but there's no practicality. You can get 3-4 shots out of the same rimfire case before it's a dud.
