I am going to be doing some coyote hunting and have been looking at different rifles and reading about all the pros and cons of each rifle. What do those that hunt coyote prefer to use? I have been looking at .22-250, .223, or a .204.
Out of the calibers you have listed, I'd go with the 22-250 but any of those would do the job.
Another one that may fit your needs is a 243, I switched from a 22-250 to a 243 about 5 years ago and haven't looked back. A 58gr vmax out of a 243 has almost identical ballistics to a 55gr vmax out of the 22-250. You can also go up to 115gr bullets for larger game.
I have been KHorneting them, but I am in a KHorneting mood.
Of what you listed a fast twist 22-250 could do about anything. If you are adventurous a fast twist 223 Rem sent to a smith for AI treatment can as well.
I've got an old 788 Remington in .222 I like for Fox and Coyote. I call 'em in and most shots are fairly close.
The .222 is quieter and doesn't disturb neighbors.
I coyote hunt with a .22-250 most of the time but I think this year I am going to carry a .243. The. 22-250 is awesome and would never let you down but after so many years of leaving other rifles in the safe its time for a change!
As many have said, any of your choices would work great. My main "go to" coyote gun is a 17 Remington with 30 grain berger varmint bullets. Lately I have enjoyed watching how fast the .44 240 grain hornady xtps do their thing though. They don't even know what hit them.
there are a ton of calibers that will do coyotes in just fine. personally i use a 260. the reason is it bucks the wind pretty well but above all its the rifle i spend the most time behind and i pretty much know what it will do at x range with x wind. i dont save pelts but if i did the 260 witha amax bullet doesn't do to much damage.
I would say the 22-250 is probably the best overall, I have used my M4 before, my AR-15 and I bought a Remington 770 last year and killed one with it and loved it. But it's a .308, a bit overkill but I like it.
