I got a range bag for Christmas this year. I'm trying to think of what I want to keep in there. I don't want to over pack, but I want to have necessary items.

Some me things are easy, I'll have a basic tool kit, a basic cleaning kit, a staple gun for hanging targets, and eye and ear protection. There is room for ammo, zip lock bags for brass, magazines, and a few hand guns. I'm also considering a small first aid kit, paper and pencils, copies of tax stamps.

What at do you keep in your range bag? What am I not thinking of? What seems useless?

In addition to your list, sunscreen and an extra baseball cap (good use for the NRA caps I accumulate every year). Batteries for my ear protection. In addition to my first aid kit, I also have a "trauma pack" that has that clotting stuff that you can put into a GSW. Cost me about $20 at Sportsman's Guide.

a .25"x8" brass rod and a small hammer. If you reload, it's bound to happen sooner or later.

    spare ear plugs
10/22 mags. (apparently it's not uncommon to show up at the range with out them) :stickpoke:

Laugh it up, funny boy. (I now have a spare 10/22 and 20 rd AR mag in the one pouch that was empty)

I also found the light duty staple guns fit nicely in a bottle pouch. Great for targets without being huge like the big ones. I love mine. And if your backer is not very sturdy, you don't have to worry about pressing too hard. It's got a really light spring.

judt make sure you get the long staples. Short ones don't post cardboard to wood very securely. (IDPA, backers, etc).

I'm sure it's been said many times, but somebody up thread mentioned bug spray. A necessity for sure. Just be mindful of getting it on your plastic guns. Or anything else plastic for that matter. I have read that it can act as a solvent on some plastics.

Im 90% sure it's the deet that is what eats plastic. The rest of the ingredients not so much. If that helps.

All very good lists. Extras in my bag are a universal pistol mag loader, shot timer & laser range finder, hand wipes in case you want food or drink while there. 550 cord to hang various targets from if permitted at the range.

Some things I've seen others carry at the range that have come in handy are a spare vehicle key in case of lockout, TP because the odds that the person before you used the last bit go up in proportion to how far away the range is from any place else. A variety of spare targets under the carpet in the back of the SUV.

One of the things I keep now is a few different size magazine loaders, very helpful if you have older people with you shooting.
My parents basically quit going to the range with us last year, when I asked why they both said their hands hurt trying to load magazines. Very easy problem to cure, they both come with us often now.

Speaking of brass rods... a 1/4" was too large for .556. I used a 7/32" from McMaster Carr.

Even with the very subtle tarnishing, I had to polish it to fit down the nose of an .556 bbl.

I'm now second guessing my next range trip. I 'm not sure I can concentrate while wondering what might be lurking in the range bags in the lanes next to me.......
If you combine 2 or 3 of the above you get the makings of a horror movie......
