Valpo police: Feud led to fatal shooting

VALPARAISO | The man accused of fatally shooting his mother's boyfriend Friday night at their Valparaiso home fired the shots after being criticized about not helping out around the house, Valparaiso police said Monday.
Edward Ibarra, 21, of 308 Morgan Boulevard, Valparaiso, was arrested at 4:45 a.m. Saturday -- about five hours after the shooting.
Police said Ibarra and the victim -- Juan Garcia, 33, who lived in Illinois but also stayed at the Morgan Boulevard home -- had ongoing arguments. Garcia didn't feel Ibarra did enough around the house and also needed to get a job.
The tensions ignited Friday night when a screen door that was broken by the wind was left alone by Ibarra. Garcia apparently wanted Ibarra to pick it up, police said.
The two exchanged words and got into a physical fight. Ibarra, who was known to carry a handgun, left the home for a couple hours and then returned, police said.
Ibarra's mother and Garcia were outside the home at the time. Several minutes later, about 11:47 p.m., Garcia walked back inside. Ibarra, while about 5 feet away, shot several rounds into Garcia, killing him, according to police.
Valparaiso Detective Lt. John Ross, who investigated the case, said Ibarra didn't say anything to Garcia, just shot him. Ibarra told police that Garcia was looking at him and he felt Garcia might engage him in another physical fight.
Ibarra fled after the shooting, but Officers Jerame Simpson and Andrew Taylor spotted him standing at Indiana and Washington streets at 4:45 a.m. Ibarra was arrested without incident and admitted shooting his mother's boyfriend, police said.
Police said Ibarra took his gun apart and discarded the pieces in various locations. Police said they have recovered part of the weapon.
Porter County Prosecutor Brian Gensel expected a murder charge to be filed against Ibarra by today.

That's less than a mile from my house. Glad to see it was a family feud instead of someone getting a bug up their *** and shooting us commoners.
