Traveling to a friend's bachelor party tomorrow morning approximately 30 minutes inside the Illinois border. Obviously I'm going to have to stow my EDC in the trunk and such. Just wanted to ask, what's the legal and recommended way to transport a handgun and/or long gun (including ammo naturally) across the people's republic border? (gonna be hugging the speed limit the whole way, so my apologies to any of you who happen to get stuck behind me)

I'm assuming locked and secured in the trunk, magazines separate?

If you have an Indiana carry license the handgun is fine anywhere inside the vehicle including on your person as long as it is concealed. When you exit the vehicle it must remain locked inside the vegicle; either in a locking case or with the doors locked. If in a traffic stop you do not have to reveal the presence of the handgun unless asked. Jim.

Assuming handgun and you have a Larry?

If so, then it does not leave the vehicle.

    1. Put handgun on belt in Indiana.

    2. Drive to Illinois. Do not get out of car in Illinois.

    3. Get gas and coffee in Indiana, not Illinois.

    4. Arrive at your destination and see your friend.

Our rules have always been as follows: Drive straight through Illinois, obeying the speed limit and stopping only at the casino in Peoria, with eight rifles, two handguns, and 3K rounds of ammo locked in the back of the truck. Having survived Illinois, motor on through Iowa and arrive in South Dakota. Bring fire down upon the dog towns for 2-3 days! Reverse the procedure with a somewhat lighter load on the way home. Never had a problem! :)

Years ago i called a sheriffs office to find that out, his tone was a not happy one when describing what i needed to do. He advised me to keep everything in the trunk, in the case, he said it would be a good idea to take the magazines out and disassemble the firearm but that wasnt required. No rounds in the chamber, again he was not excited. I think thats changed now as someone earlier said, but i thought it was funny

04 and Kirk are both correct, presuming having the IN LTCH. If you need to stop at a gas station, etc. just leave 'er in the car, then re-holster (or however you're carrying) once you return inside the vehicle.

Just remember, you're a 'guest' there, and the best option is to act as one does while a guest, anywhere. Keep to the speed limits (or thereabouts) and be courteous. Generally speaking, the response(s) you're getting reflect the signals you're sending. ;)

Why? Well, not only is it the proper thing to do, but ya know damn well IF an incident occurs, however minor, the anti-2A Illinois libtards will be all over ANY report of those 'evil Hoosiers' acting a fool in 'their' State. Why give the low-lifes any 'ammunition'?

Plenty of libtard-loons in 'Chiraq', but the good folks in Illinois still outnumber the loons, thank god.

Travel to Illinois regularly, never an issue.

^^^This^^^ has been my preferred People's Republic Of procedure for the last 20+ years. Never the first issue.

Does anyone know if this would apply to motorcycles with lockable saddlebags, or tank/tail bags? Are you illegal if you park the bike then get off and immediately move the gun to say your lockable saddlebag, or would you have to keep your butt on the seat while transferring it?

heres a question with IL. If im going to my moms house and she allows me to carry in her house. As long as I park on her property am I good to carry the whole time? Or do I have to lock it up and then bring it in her house and then reholster?
