I just took an AR, Glock 23 (with empty mag still in the gun), 100 rounds of ammo for AR in a plastic box, 50 rounds of ammo for the G23 (in plastic case), extra mags for both firearms, knife, flashlight, cleaning kit and sling all in one Pelican case.

The ammo doesn't have to be in the original box. The rounds just cant touch each other and have to be in a sturdy case designed for ammo.

I was held at the ticket counter for five minutes until they scanned the case. After it cleared I was free to go through security.

I would not skimp or cheap out on a case unless I was transporting a Hi-Point :dunno:

It was actually pretty easy to do, but the airline employees and TSA don't have a clue as to what the actual rules are.
I was told by them to use TSA locks. That is not true.
They told me that I had to keep my claim ticket to claim my guns. Also not true. They put the case on the luggage carousel with all the other luggage. This was done at both South Bend, IN and West Palm Beach, FL.
