In light of recent events, this situation is glaring me in the face and I don't know if there is a correct plan of action.

Say you are driving a 1986 Dodge Ram and the LA Police open fire on you. You have done nothing wrong, you are a law abiding citizen, and you choose to legally carry a firearm for your personal protection.

Keep in mind that this incident involves YOU being an unidentified target and THEM riddling your vehicle with their bullet of choice.

Here are the two ways in which I see the situation pan out.

    1. You chose not to use your weapon and try your best to identify yourself. There is a good possibility that you will be shot and killed (although it is a good thing that LAPD seems to be very lax on their qualifications lately).

    2. You chose to fire back in obvious self defense, you stop the immediate attack but as soon as the 5-0's buddies show up, you are dispatched of IMMEDIATELY (there is no doubt in my mind that this would happen)

This scares me guys.. Option 1. has a chance of survival, Option 2. is certain death. Neither option is acceptable to me.

What other angles am I not thinking of. What would YOU do?

Looks to me like both options pretty much suck. You have already been targeted as a threat (no pun intended), and deadly force is coming your way. Trying to surrender-maybe. Shooting back-certain death. About the only other option is trying to escape.

My question is, why the paranoia? This?> http://www.buzzfeed.com/tessastuart/two-mistakenly-shot-during-frantic-lapd-during-manhunt

I feel it is justified paranoia. This exact situation is happening in LA right now. 3 separate incidences of this exact same scenario.

I would have to agree with you after reading of the police shootings in LA. Geeze, the cops are scared $h1^^less. Whatever happened to their "professional" training?
Probably best to put big signs all over your vehicle: "I AM NOT CHRISTOPHER DORNER"

So far, despite their best efforts, the LAPD has not managed to kill the citizens they have mistakenly fired upon.

Shoot back, and you will be killed in this circumstance.

I know that Russia gets a lot of flak for civilian dash cams, but It's starting to sound like a good investment!

I would surrender. Maybe I'll live long enough to sue them. The shooting back option in this scenario is certain death.

Im with the guys that said stay out of CA.

In that article the chief says "He knows what he's doing....we trained him."
Well given the "minor" screw up and utter lack of marksmanship, Id say just about everyone else is trained pretty darn poorly.
Do they not know what a felony stop is?

LAPDs issues have been well documented for a long time. Its not gotten better which leads me to believe they arent really interested in making it better.
Guys dont go off shooting just because they feel like it. Somewhere along the way whoever opened up first got the idea that it was ok.
Either that, or it was an unintentional discharge from one guy and everyone opened up. Either way, poor training....very poor training.

    This makes the most sense^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

If I did not know it was LEO for some obscure reason ie. darkness/no notice before being fired on....it is likely I would return fire. It is also likely I would not live long enough to pursue the above. Catch 22

Yes floor it, And maybe crash hard, really hard. They might not shoot you if your paralyzed. Good question OP how are we to defend ourselves from such a situation? Be hard to surrender to a firing squad!

If I was the owner of a vehicle that was similar to a wanted person with a million dollar bounty on his head, I'd find other means of transportation until the guy was caught or his truck was located. I remember the D.C. Sniper and seeing men getting yanked out of white vans at gunpoint. Thanks but i'll take the bus!

To many in Kalipornia, the frightened local LEOs now ....

..... are getting their Just Desserts for malfeasance and mistreatment of citizens, et al in the past. The disgruntled LEO -- on the run -- has had MANY months to set up his own survival caches and bunkers, and is probably far away IN MEXICO BY NOW; MORE POWER TO HIM, IF THAT SCENARIO can be justified, and is correct. Maybe it's PTSD. He could be US! He may disappear for a year or so, then randomly pop up. There are citizens who will harbor him, despite the $1,000,000 bounty. His MANIFESTO needs to be published -- NOT just some wild-haired-sounding excerpts of it. O where O where are the drones when you need them. (I heard that the "... fugitive has Øbama stickers on his vehicle!") I also say, "By all means necessary", no matter if I have to wait ten years, or look at ten-year-old grudges. "Cross-hairs Don' Lie."
Defend myself by all means necessary.

These people were not driving a vehicle even closely related to the suspect though.

Edit- it was a smaller truck
