Weapon Stolen During Gun Store Burglary Brought In For Repair - Indiana News Story - WRTV Indianapolis

How stupid do you have to be to bring a stolen gun back in for repair... From the store you stole it from !!!:):

INDIANAPOLIS -- Two men were questioned by police and one arrested Monday after a handgun that was stolen during a bold burglary at an Indianapolis gun store last year was brought back to the store for repairs.

Don Davis, who owns Don's Guns near 38th Street and Lafayette Road, told 6News' Jack Rinehart he called police when two men came into his store Monday with the weapon.

"When a fellow came in here today and said, 'I bought it off the street,' well, whether he did or not, I don't know, but he didn't get to leave until the police got here and they took him out of here in handcuffs," Davis said.

The two men were taken into police custody and questioned, but then let go. Police said one of the men had a valid gun permit and told investigators that he purchased the gun on the street, which is not a crime in Indiana.

The other man -- 18-year-old Anthony Butler -- was also questioned and released, although police later told Rinehart that his release was a mistake.

Butler is currently serving a two-year term in a work-release program and was let out on Monday for the sole purpose of attending a job skills training course, not to run errands at a gun store, corrections officials said

"In no way shape or form should he have been anywhere other than where he was directed to go," said Tom Marendt, director of Marion County Community Corrections.

    Anthony Butler

Early Monday evening, Butler returned to the work-release facility, where he was arrested, police said. He was being held without bond.

Butler has prior misdemeanor and felony convictions for illegal possession of a firearm, Marendt said. In 2007, police said Butler was shot twice during gang-related drive-by shootings.

Last summer, 14-year-old twin brothers were arrested and charged with using a stolen car as a battering ram to break into the gun store and steal an assault rifle and several handguns. They are currently awaiting trial.

Could be worse....I was talking with a gentleman a few weeks ago who told me the worst Don's story I've ever heard. Was back when Don had a store at 96th & Keystone. Some years back this guy had a burglary at his home while he was out and had 6-7 handguns stolen. A week or so later he goes into Don's to browse....surprise! There are his guns under the counter. He tells the clerk they're his (stolen) guns, and the clerk tells him to get the f*** out of the store. This was back before everybody had cell phones, so he leaves, calls the police from a pay phone and they show up fairly shortly thereafter. Of course the guns are no longer under the counter - they searched and found three in the back room, one in Don's wastebasket (!!!) and never did recover the other two. Now, this is a hearsay story and it would be libelous to say anything specifically bad about Don or his ever so honest employees.....

Ok, I just went to the Don's gun web site and this was posted on their?????

Gun dealer's rock stirs up a fuss
The First and Second amendments to the Constitution are converging at Don Davis' new home near Greenwood.
Davis, the well-known gun dealer who tells TV viewers, "I don't want to make any money, folks, I just love to sell guns," recently built a home in White River Township.
He placed an ornamental rock in the front yard of the house on Eagle Trace Drive.
Inscribed in the rock is an eagle, the U.S. flag and the Second Amendment. One of Davis' notable sayings also is inscribed: "It's better to own a gun and not need it than to need a gun and not own it."
John Nystrom, president of the Highland Park neighborhood association, said the association's answering machine has been filled with protests about the rock, which at 8 feet long and 3 feet high is larger than many cemetery monuments.
"The rock is not going over very well," Nystrom said.
He said he hasn't received so many protests since Wal-Mart tried to build a store at Olive Branch Road and Ind. 135 earlier this year.
Nystrom said the association would ask Davis to remove the rock.
    Davis won't budge.
"The only way I am going to remove that rock is if one of our fine judges protecting the Constitution tells me to," he said Friday.
Davis maintains that his right to display the rock is protected by the First Amendment. The First Amendment protects freedom of speech, press, religion, and the right to assemble and to petition. The Second Amendment guarantees the right to bear arms.
"I respect their right to object, and they should respect my right to display my rock," said Davis, who moved into the house Thursday.
Davis contends his immediate neighbors have not complained.
"I've not heard one negative comment about it," Davis said. "Every time I'm out there, people stop and comment about how much they like it."
One neighbor, William Adams, said he had no problems with the rock. "I don't think anyone close does. He's a little flamboyant, but he's a nice guy."
Davis said one man knocked on his door and asked him to pose for a photograph by the rock.
Davis said he strove for good taste in designing the rock. The inscription was done by Riverside Stone in Mooresville.
"It is beautiful and not any different than someone supporting Purdue or IU with their flags and banners," Davis said. "My next-door neighbor has a Purdue flag flying under the American flag. It isn't any different."
Johnson County Commissioner Joe DeHart said his office has not received any complaints about the rock. Neither have other county offices.
"And I (personally) don't have any complaints about, either," DeHart added.
Nystrom maintains that the rock violates neighborhood covenants, but he did not specify the language in question.
"We hope it will be removed in days," he added.
    Davis plans to fight back.
"As soon as someone tries to get me to remove my rock, I'll have my lawyers examine every covenant to see if everyone is obeying all of them and if the association is enforcing those, too," he said.

I remember during the Clinton years, Don was all over the TV saying that we needed more gun bans, nobody needed hi-cap magazines or "assault rifles" etc, and even held a big media event where he destroyed dozens of firearms.

Now, if the man honestly believes that no citizen (except him) should have guns, then the fact that he makes millions by selling guns to citizens make him nothing less than a hypocrite.

I'd never spend a penny at his store since he feels this way.

I don't want to make a lot of false acquisitions, but I have heard a lot of negative things about Don and his gun deals. Many of those rumors, which I cannot confirm or deny, are that he is a felon and that his wife owns the business e just works there. Another thing I have heard is that a lot of his guns have been linked back to organized crime in locations such as Chicago. Like I said, I cannot confirm or deny any of this, but that is just some of what I have been told.

There have been multiple news stories in which FBI data has named Don's Guns as the FFL with the 3rd highest number of firearms recovered that were used in a crime.

    He's a hypocrite.

    His prices are insane.

His employees are unsavory, and unsafe.

Not to defend a scoundrel like Don, but any gun shop of any decent size appears to be on the list including Bradis and Albros. Anything from the Bradys should be taken with a large dose of salt.

I have only been in there twice in my life. First time was young and didn't know about other ranges. Second time I was in there to check what kind of hellish price they had on a SR9. As I was walking around to find the Ruger section a customer was in there renting one of the Tech 9s to shoot in the range, they were loading the magazing on the sales floor, I wasn't very comfortable with that. So I keep a peripheral look on these guys for my own safety. After they loaded the two magazines, the store clerk slides one of the magazines into the receiver and racks the slide then hands it to the customer to take it into the range! Next thing I know I am doing the whole :runaway:all the way to my car.
