This morning I had just got done showering and was getting ready to head to the post office to send my CHL paperwork. I had been loading things into my car earlier that morning so I had left the back door unlocked. While I was getting ready, I heard my door chime from my alarm system.

I'm living with my grandmother so I assumed that it was her coming home. I peeked out my bedroom door and just about had a heart attack. I saw a man walking past my hallway. I quickly grabbed my 17 from the night stand and walked down the hallway. I saw him with his back to me in the den just standing there looking around. I yelled stop and he turned around and then saw my gun pointed at him and he put his hands up. I yelled for him to get on the ground and he started speaking in Spanish. I pointed at him and then to the ground and he got down. I got my cell phone out of my pocket and called 911. I told the operator that a man had entered my house and I had him held at gunpoint. She told me the police were on the way and I told her to tell them to use the backdoor.

The police took about 3 mins to get there. (I was surprised and happy about that!) I heard my door chime again and the officer yelled out to me that he was a police officer. I told him that we were in the den. He came in with his gun drawn. He asked me to put my gun down. I set my gun down on the table and showed him my hands were empty. He had another officer behind him coming through the door. They cuffed the guy and then took a report from me.

Not sure what will happen next but my heart was going about a million miles an hour and I'm just glad I was able to contact 911 and keep everything under control.

Great job and great reaction! You did everything right as far as I see it! At least the guy will get residential entry which is a felony! What I really like is the fact that when the guy could not understand you, you pointed to the ground, most people would have kept yelling at him. Great job again!

Congrats on the nice takedown. Those are scary situations. Seems as though you handled it well. Glad to hear that you had a positive experience with the local PD also.

When I lived on the southside of Indy in 2008 I had a woman come to the door, my girlfriend answered and the woman peeked into the apartment to see me sitting on the couch in my underwear (classic american thing to do after work). She pushed the door open, knocking my girlfriend out of the way. I sprinted for the bedroom, crazy woman chasing behind me.

I entered my bedroom and grabbed my Rem 870 which sat next to the bedroom. She came into the door way and there i stood, in my underwear, with a shotgun.

She freaked, she said that she thought I was her boyfriend and i was cheating on her with my girlfriend....cocaine is a hell of a drug. I quickly escorted the woman (possibly crack head) out of the apartment. Woman left in a van. Entire incident lasted about a minute. Reported to apartment complex and police.

so yeah, i know what you mean about the heart pounding.

Sounds like you did just about everything right! Except not locking the door!:D
    Glad everything worked out alright.

Yikes, who just walks into a random house?

Was he armed? Acting threatening? Or did he appear mostly lost?

In either case, sounds like you handled it well.

Great job, and I hope to NEVER have to pull my gun on someone.

BUT, in that same vein, lets say using the OP's scenario, that he came upon the intruder, yelled stop, said intruder turned, and then the OP opened fire killing said intruder before anything else happened. Would the OP be justified in the shooting? The OP didnt state if the intruder was armed with anything, but in MY scenario, the intruder has no weapon at all. Would the OP still have been justified in shooting an unarmed intruder?

I know, I know, we arent lawyers, and we didnt stay in the Holiday Inn... but just asking for some debate on this issue...

Wow, great job! Amazing story for sure.

I'm surprised the Officers didn't tell you exactly what would happen to the perp. Maybe they want to talk to the homeowner (your grandmother) to see if she hired the guy to do some work on the house before they actually charge him with a crime. Were they able to make contact with your Grandmother before they took him away?

Of course, they had a language barrier to overcome, when they questioned the "perp", unless one of them was spanish speaking. So he probably had nothing else to add?

What is the incident Control Number? I would like to look it up.

Congratulations on handling a tense and adversarial situation in a competent manner.

Every time the Police are sent on a call, an Incident Control Number is generated by Communications. They are available as a public record unless it is an incident that is still under investigation.

There are complex lengthy investigations by many Officers that are all tied together by the Control Number. and of course, nothing is available until everything is completed. Sometimes names and other vital info is blacked out before the report is released.

I don't believe that this incident falls under either of these categories, therefore, by paying the fee for the documents, the report is available to any who ask for it within a couple of days of the incident at the appropriate Police Agency.

Not that I doubt the veracity of the original story...... Oh no.

IT would be best to start a new thread, and not have this one turned into a debate that we all know will end in neg reps and arguing.

    Great job to teh OP!!
