I am wanting to build a shooting bench and wondered how many inches high the top should be from the ground also any thoughts on 1 would be appreciated Thankyou
Most shooting benches I have seen are about waist high on me. That would be about 3 feet high.
We have wood benches for the casual shooters and cast concrete benches for the serious benchrest shooters at my range. I think there might be photos here. Fort Wayne Rifle & Revolver Gun Club... Home
I'm not sure if that is a critical dimension. Build the stool to match the bench and I think you will be OK.
I've considered building one like those that mount to the receiver on the back of a truck/suv....I think cabelas sells them...
ETA: Cabelas doesn't list them any longer but here is a link to a patent for one....a few minor mods to keep from infringing and it should be gtg. Receiver mounted shooting rest - Patent 6935064
The only thing I see different about the one in the link from those I've seen is that there needs to be a support of some sort between the bench and the ground, usually a cheap scissor jack or something of the sort......
My younger brother and I built one of these last fall. Very nice and solid. We modified the plans to get a 4 ft. wide table top for more room. A very heavy, stable bench to say the least. Shooting Bench. html
