If it crosses a state boundary then yes you need a transfer thru a FFL in your home state. Whether money changes hands or not. Ownership is the key factor.
Also as an Indiana resident you may buy/transfer a long gun thru a FFL as long as the other state shares a border with Indiana. But all handguns must go thru home state.
Odds are they won't. Just because you can get away with something does not make it right. INGO members should not be giving out advice to knowingly violate laws.
