What are your thoughts and how to go about protecting your property if you are in it?

Properties can be replaces but if someone attempts to throw a Molotov at your place while you're in it, that's a different story.

A riot is not different than a regular break in.
You just might need more ammo if a large crowd is threatening your life.

Really depends on how violent the crowd is. Any type of force multiplier used to break in and threaten you and your property would be a justifiable means to protect yourself. It really comes down to your judgement, if I was a rioter and had a baseball bat but saw a laser right on my chest before I got to the door, I'd probably skip that place. A weapon is just as powerful of a deterrent as it is a tool with deadly force.

iisnt that guy on the left wearing some of that illegal body armor that no decent person needs to own?

    Yep.

And he is clearly holding a dangerous weapon with a high capacity magazine that no reasonable person needs to own...

If it's your home, an attack on your curtilage. Business? Erm. Unless you're situated there and then self defense? Reasonable belief, etc.
