What does a good but used Remington 870 12 gauge go for? What about new? What should I look for in one for home defense?

for $300, it had better be nearly mint condition. (Express model, that is)

There've been a few for sale here on INGO between $250-300.

Brand new in a store, I personally wouldn't pay more than $300 - but I know they (all shops) sell just about every one they get at more than that.

It also depends on model of 870. Express? wingmaster? 2-3/4" or 3", smooth or rifled bore? Wood stock... Synthetic? etc. Extras? Personally find a good 870 cheap and take your own time to modify and tweak it to realy make it "yours" Thats in my opinion is part of the fun of the 870.
