Most newer tanks have and anti-siphon device at the tank. Take a trip to a salvage yard and take a look.
In my Blazer there is a plastic ball inside the fill tube where it meets the tank. When you put gasoline in, the ball floats up allowing the tank to fill. Once the flow of gasoline stops, the ball falls back into place and seats there preventing one from putting a hose into the tank....did some hunting on my own. Looks like a glorified strainer .
good to know though. My truck holds quite a bit of fuel, and it would be nice to access in an emergency.. guess I won't, unless I don't want the truck any more.
There are many different designs, one almost has to remove the fill tube completely and investigate further.....sometimes it is just the little flap at the top.so how does one go about bypassing these things that keep the tube from going down in there?

If you don't care about the tank, just put a bucket under it and poke a hole in it.
