Was at a garage sale the other day and picked up an old milsurp 100 round 7.62 tote. Just a small military green bag. Fits a box of 12 gauge shells nicely. Sparked an interesting thought:

If you could only have 25 shells to accommodate any likely situation, what would you have?

What if? Not a likely situation, but still a fun 'what if?'

When the shtf, and you just grab your trusty 870 and the bag of shells, what would be in there and why?

probably 2 birdshot, 8 buckshot, and 15 slugs. The shotshells in case I would see a large bird worth eating, the buckshot for self defense, slugs for double duty as self defense or hunting.

Half rock salt, half whole peppercorns. Goes well on steak, pork chop, etc... Make sure to get rifled barrel for the freshly ground taste!

5x 7 1/2 shot, 5x slug/00 buck defensive load, 15x 00 buck. This should cover game of opportunity plus leave a good supply of 00 for, well, social purposes.

Alright, looking at all these serious answers, I've gotta give a serious answer, too: 25 x target load. I've gotta shoot clay or I ain't right.

It is a good thing you had the white phosphorus round like in case you saw a deer or something

I would say 15 00Buck for the versatility, and then 5 slugs and 5 #6 for the what I would consider small emergencies where you need to bring something big down from some distance or you really need that squirrel way up in those leaves (at least bad enough to waste a shell, which is 4% of your stock).
