Yes, 20 billion for that short a distance, compared to across an ocean.
And yes, the forces will be much greater.

But they have escape ports so you can get back to the surface in case something goes wrong.

Each car would be completely self contained, capable of surfacing, providing any decompression necessary, and sustaining life with rations and hydration for a week until rescue.

Not talking about socialism, because that will never work.

When I was a boy and the space program was at it's peak there was a saying, "what man can conceive, man can achieve."

When I got saved and turned my heart and mind toward Jesus, I thought that saying was hubris.

Then while reading the Bible I came to the Tower of Babel account and God makes this statement.

And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.

So I would not put it past possibility.
