Depends on the end use. Simmons, Tasco, Bushnell/Burris, Weaver, Leupold all make scopes ranging up to 4x for 50 yards. I have a Bushnell 2-6x that works for me out to 200m. Hog hunting? a 2 power will work. Leupold 2.5-8x is popular but outside your stated budget.
I have been recommending the Hawke Vantage 2x7. Was on sale for $130 at Pyramidair couple months ago. Focuses clearly and smooth adjustments in terms of clicks / power ring / objective bell (parallax).
Stay away from Bushnell. If you have a problem you will not get any help. Their customer service is absolutely horrible.
I'm still trying to get them to contact me back about a AR Optic 1-8×.
I'll never buy Bushnell again.
