    Associated Press - November 14, 2008 5:34 PM ET
NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (AP) - A guard's handgun and Taser went off during a struggle with a prisoner awaiting sentencing in a Hamilton County courthouse today.
Sheriff Doug Carter says no one was seriously injured. He says the struggle occurred in a holding area shoftly before 31-year-old Joshua Lindsey of Indianapolis was to appear for a sentencing hearing on a recent armed robbery conviction.
Guard Dan Trowbridge was sent to the hospital with minor facial injuries. Carter says Trowbridge's Glock 40 handgun went off during the struggle, but no one was hit. Other deputies saw the struggle on a surveillance camera and subdued Lindsey.

I haven't seen it posted yet.

The handgun and taser just spontaneously "went off?" [I love the way the media does that.]

In any case, I'm glad no one was seriously hurt.

If I'm not mistaken this is the guy FPD arrested attempting to rob the CVS on 116th st in Fishers. Maybe fpdshooter can give us some details?

Yes this is the same guy. He had robbed several CVS stores. We were doing surveillance on the stores when one of our detective saw the guy run in with the gun and wearing a mask. After a foot pursuit and fight he was arrested.

He was found guilty and was about to be sentenced to 70 years for multiple felonies when this happened.

Details are still sketchy at this point. I have not been to the hospital to visit the deputy but I spoke with one of the detective investigating this.

The injured deputy was taking off the handcuffs, per the judges orders, when the badguy spun around and grabbed the deputy's gun. During the struggle, 1 shot was fired into the floor. Somehow the gun jammed, I am guessing due to the deputy having his hand on the slide when the gun went off - INTENTIONALLY CAUSING THE GUN TO MALFUNCTION!

The deputy and the badguy fought for 4 minutes! The deputy was obviously fighting for his life. When help arrived, the badguy had complete control of the weapon as the deputy was barely conscience. Badguy had the gun pointed against the side of the deputied head and was trying to pull the trigger. Responding deputies could not get a shot at the badguy as he was using the injured deputy as a shield.

Responding deputies took the badguy into custody. At some point a Taser was deployed, however only one dart struck the badguy and was marginally effective.

LIKE I SAID, DETAILS ARE STILL SKETCHY AT THIS TIME AND MORE/BETTER INFO WILL BE AVAILABLE LATER.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Hamilton Co Sherrif's Dept as well as the injured deputy and his family.

    Chris

Sorry I didn't get this up earlier - we were busy last night and I came home and got some good ZZZZ's!

Look for some changes in the way things are done at the courthouse from now on!

So the way I read that, the BG was attempting to fire the gun and the deputy was trying to stop it? That was an excellent response (imho) for him to make [intentionally causing the gun to malfunction], especially considering the stressful circumstances.

My prayers will be with him also. Thanks for the update, Chris. :)

Yes maam - the badguy was trying to kill the deputy - of that, there is no doubt.

The deputy put up one hell of a fight. For those who have never been in a knock down drag out fight - 4 minutes is an eternity! Most fights only last a minute or so, there is a reason for that! Think about how long a round is in boxing or MMA - then those guys get to sit down and rest in between rounds!

The will to survive is strong in this deputy!

Thanks for the info on this Chris. The article doesn't do this story justice. I hope the officer will make a quick and full recovery! Sounds like he did a great job!

4 minutes of fighting!! It must've felt like an hour to the deputy.

The good guys won, and that's what counts.

That is a very good instinct the deputy has, jamming the gun and all, I must give props for that, and for fighting 4 minutes. it takes about half that time for our first responders to get to a signal 10 call at work, so that is an eternity. I hope this is an eye opener for judges to quit being idiots and order the defendant to be unrestrained. I do not care if it makes them look guilty or not, its a security risk.

Actually, the security risk is having one deputy on hand to handle a prisoner being uncuffed.

Wow, I didn't know all the details about it. I hope the deputy makes a full recovery...

This is just one of the many reasons there are TWO of us when we make trips from the prison, and the officer escorting the offender is not armed.

I hope the judge learns from this, as well as anywhere else around the country that are making the same mistake, before they have to learn the hard way. :n00b:
