    Updated with Parts, Barrel, Pics.

Well, since I am building my first AR, my first SBR and getting my first suppressor I figure this would be the right section of the forum to do a time-line thread, I know others have but I think it would be good for me to document it and to be able to reflect back on it when done, also it will allow for advice to be given in one place.

Step 1: I solicited help from a friendly INGO'er that graciously agreed to assist. (I'm letting him shoot the first mag through it as a reward for putting up with me during this process.)
    Step 2: I Decided what I want.
    a: 300blk SBR with Suppressor
b: Second upper 5.56 not short barrel
c: I am going with Noveske on the 300blk for barrel, lower, upper.
d: Most other parts are decided on as well but we'll get to them as we go
e: For the 5.56 I am not decided on what I am doing, it's more of an I don't want to sit around waiting on a stinkin' stamp for 5-8 months with a completely built AR except the barrel situation.
Step 3: I ordered my Noveske Lower.

Fun story on this, it took me weeks to find one in stock, I called the seller and confirmed they did have them and they sold it to me then and there. I went to my local FFL, paid them up front, they took all the information and faxed it, I went home. A week later I still have no tracking number. So I call the seller, apparently the FFL License was never faxed with the other paperwork and they have been unable to make contact with them because of the insanity going on right now. So I go to my FFL, explain the deal, they were super cool and took care of it that night. Got my tracking number the following Monday. Gets delivery attempt at 7:35am....not many gun shops open at 7:35am. So I wait longer, till the holidays are over and go in to my FFL just hoping they went to the post office. They did, YAY! So I fill out my 4473 or whatever, this is when I find out that your local FFL will not only sell you a gun, they will tell you when your drivers license is expired. ACK! So I go to the BMV, get my new license, drive back to the FFL, finish the paperwork and BAM! I'm so stinkin' happy right now!

Step 4: Get the Quick Attach Flash Hider for the suppressor I want.

    2013-01-03_06-19-46_887 by faineroxor, on Flickr

Step 5: Get some PMAGS (admittedly I got these a few weeks ago but I did order more a day before the insanity which I later found out was a day AFTER the insanity started, their system was not caught up)

Step 5.5: Today I got my MIAD Pistol Grip and STR stock. I have to say the MIAD pistol grip is fantastic. I yanked off the back strap that was initially installed, installed one of the alternate backstraps and went from eh it's a good grip to WOW. I tested out alternate front strap as well but I liked the one with that was on it originally. The STR Stock was really high quality, I want the rest of the rear equipment and my LPK now 8( Speaking of which I'm not sure how I'm going to get ahold of a spikes enhanced LPK....better start doing research.

Step 5.65: lol, I got all of my pictures for all the forms I will be filling out +2 extras, you never know if the bug will take me and I decide I want something else after all. I have printed 2 copies of my form 1. Monday I will be going to get my finger print cards and LEO signature. It shall begin....I'm not a good "waiter".

Step 6: Is going to be to get the suppressor paperwork started and get that paid for. I'm hoping while I'm paying that off restocking will take place and parts will become available again.(process started)

State of the Union 1/18/2013: Well, at this time, just to document the happenings of the times I want to throw out what I'm seeing. Parts for AR's that are internal or required for function are extremely easy to find, just not from the companies that sell them. Almost all companies are operating on backorders they are not expecting to be able to fulfill from 8-12 months out. The auction sites are crazy right now. A Spike's Tactical Enhanced LPK ($168.99) is selling for 350-500usd. A Spike's Tactical Buffer Assembly Kit ($69.99) is selling for 200+. An XDM pistol sold at a store for 485usd not two months ago is selling for over 1000usd. The inflated prices are making it impossible for a reasonable person to acquire parts to build. As it stands I'm probably just going to work on the NFA regulated stuff for a while and try to get the optics, sling, and other furniture that is available at this time as I can afford it with hopes that by the time the stamps come back I'll be able to pick up things like an Upper Receiver, Barrel, BCM, LPK, and Buffer Assembly.

I have had some changes in my life since my last update, will be moving and all that jazz so funds have been tighter than expected. All the same I did manage to grab a few things. I picked up a VLTOR/BCM ambi Charging handle, Noveske STS 60 ambi safety/selector switch, 2 more 30 round PMAGS, Magpul MBUS Front and Rear sights, Tactical Link QD 360 Swivel (installs on buffer tube), and a Tactical Link Ghost 2pt/1pt sling.

I got my Noveske barrel today. I was sleeping last week and my dog woke me up because the UPS man was delivering something my wife had ordered. After bringing it inside I decided to go back to bed before work and so as I lay back down I reached over to check my phone for texts, missed calls, emails, etc... As I was setting my phone back down the email icon lit up, so I went ahead and opened it. It was a notification that Ranier Arms had an 8.2" Noveske 300blk barrel in stock. I got all nervous, clicked the links, added to cart and then the fiasco began. Couldn't remember my password, so I hopped on my computer to reset it, computer decided that was the appropriate time to do some updates. Luckily I have a very fast PC, benefits of nerddom. As I'm freaking out over my phone having it in the cart and not having a password, I manage to get on their site, get the password reset, then I remembered I have to transfer the funds from savings to checking. Yowza, I'm stressing! I get the funds transfered, checked Raniers site on my PC hoping they still have them.....all gone. Less than a minute has taken place for me to do all of this and they're sold out. I hop back on my phone....still in the basket, I move through to checkout and it takes my order. Turns out Ranier operates on a first in the basket wins and not a first through checkout wins so I got my barrel which after watching the past few months will be the absolutely most rare and hard to get part based on Noveske's output, the fact they're not taking civilian orders currently and who knows what companies have backorders yet to be filled and for what. I count myself lucky, very lucky to have gotten this barrel. (it's pretty too) Hard to believe 8.2" of steel would cause so much stress and so much waiting....

As I see it I've only got a few things left, the most expensive and hardest to get for a decent price I might add.
    - Nickel Boron BCG (prefer Youngs or ZF)
    - MUR 1 Upper Receiver (Noveske or VLTOR)
    - LPK (Really hoping to get my hands on a ST Enhanced)
    - Buffer Kit (Really hoping to get my hands on a ST-T2)
    - Rail (Looking for Noveske NSR or in the event I can't get it Larue Tactical 7")
    - Aimpoint Micro
    - Larue Tactical Mount (Aimpoint Micro)
    - 2 - 20 round Magpul PMAGS (black)

Noveske sweetness. Good luck doing a build during these crazy times I fortunately am all done except optics and a buffer tube to turn my pistol into an SBR once my paperwork gets back anytime now. All from the beginning I have had it planned out like your self but with the increased prices im going to have to go a few other routes till i can find what i want at a decent price. I can't accept paying double for some things. i look forward to seeing your build progress.:ar15:

No lie, I've got an email and private message out to Corey atm, hoping to hear back soon. I will only be getting the four stamps I'm planning on unless I can somehow afford and find a Thompson.

This is another reason I want to document my build, to show what things effect my ability to build and to document this insanity going on right now from a new builder's perspective. I'll have a new update when I get home tonight as well.

Following this as well. I was planning on starting a build till it all hit the fan. I need something to occupy my mind while waiting on my M11/9 to transfer.

Looks like you're building one like mine; if so, you'll love it!

10" Noveske 300BLK Rouge Hunter, SDN-6 on a 51t Blackout, stripped Noveske lower, Magpul UBR, Dropwing/Surefire Scout, IWC hand stop, Aimpoint t-1 on a LaRue L-751, Magpul K grip, troy BUIS, troy squid grips (which I'd pass on in retrospect).

Very similar, I'm planning on going with a 7.2", same suppressor, I liked the look of the UBR but in the end the STR fit my needs so that's what I went with. I'm not doing a light on this upper. The grip and sights I'm not set on just yet though I don't care for your grips/rails. I've got a few small things incoming right now but seeing as I'm about to go into suppressor purchase mode it'll be a while before I have an update probably.

THIS is why we have NFA Day. ;)

Subscribed and looking forward to the updates!

If not for NFA day I wouldn't be doing an SBR, I'd just be doing suppressors. I really enjoyed all the variety of fun that everyone brought. At some point I'd like to return the favor and bring mine to let people shoot, when I have them all that is.

Got my barrel today. Seriously, it's like I found out my wife is 9 months pregnant. Come on BATFE!

The form 4's are easier, because you can just go to BGF and shoot it. The waiting is the toughest part. Keep the updates coming!!:)

Been a long time since I've updated this thread, since I've just been piecing it in over the past few months and didn't want the thread popping up to the top constantly getting in the way of more important threads of others I have been inactive with it, I think this weekend I will take pictures of everything I have now and do a BIG update. I got a call from my SOT, I was all happy, then the message left said "PROBLEM STATUS" and I wept a little. Anyway, it's closer than it was. No word on the Form 1 yet, and the upper receiver is still a few weeks out. All I'm waiting on is 1 part and 2 stamps and I'm set. I might do a couple little things extra but nothing crazy on this upper. I'll do a price list organized into a timeline for purchases (including shipping charges) and put any wait times I had like my BCG and upper receiver. I am just going to keep throwing huge thanks out to ESRice for being support for me through this, without him I'd have done something I regretted and cost myself a lot of moneys I'm sure. Additionally, I want to thank everyone that was part of NFA Day in 2012, that amazing experience is what finally sold me on going through with all of this. Also huge thanks to the guys that ran HUSH as well as the Class III and Rifle (specifically the AR community) here on INGO for all the solid feedback and continuous support through this whole process (I'm looking at you MVICIAN, you're feedback and posts over years have been a constant source of knowledge on AR's, I'm a secret admirer ), even though it's not done, it's getting closer, a lot closer and I'm getting excited. If all works out as I foresee this process will have taken me just under 1 year to complete, but I'll leave all of that to the final few updates I do to the thread.

All-in-all this has been an amazing learning experience so far, taught me more patience than I thought possible, and humbled me quite a bit.

Very excited to see this come together! You did it right-- you picked top-quality parts and waited to get exactly what you wanted. So many times folks rush out and buy what they can get NOW and later regret it (I've been there).

We need to take our pet SBR projects out to lovemywoods' when you get everything wrapped up.

That would be stellar, but it's probably gonna be COLD when it's finished, lol. I saw that frigid (long range) shoot you went on last winter...... How long did it take to feel your cheeks again?

    Update

As an FYI the totals are not for the squeamish. I didn't flinch as I know what I've spent but seeing it is not for the faint of heart, I think my next AR will be a PSA. Heck after this the wife won't even notice that piddly amount missing.

Well, I'll start with the porn. Just 2 pics.

    Assembled Lower and Magazines

    Plethora of goodies.

Starting with the lower I have the receiver itself (Noveske Gen1), purchased at the beginning of the meltdown. Internally there is the lower parts kit (Spike's Tactical Enhanced), the trigger (Geissele SD-E), recoil spring (Damage Industries Enhanced Chrome Silicon), safety switch (Noveske/Magpul 60deg Short Throw Safety), and buffer (Spike's T-2). The buffer tube (Spike's Tactical Mil 6pos) has a stock (Magpul STR) with an enhanced butt pad (Magpul) and a QD Sling Mount (Tactical Link Z-360 Gen 2). Finally rounding out the items attached to the lower receiver is the grip (Magpul MIAD). *The enhanced trigger guard is part of the Spike's LPK and may or may not be of Magpul manufacture. .

I do not yet have the upper receiver (VLTOR MUR-1a) but it is ordered and once my time comes will be shipped to me. To be assembled on/in the upper receiver is the BCG (FailZero M-16/M4), charging handle (BCM/VLTOR Gunfighter), barrel (Noveske 8.2" chambered for 300-BLK), flash hider (AAC Blackout 51T), optic (Aimpoint Micro H-1 on a Larue Tactical Mount; additionally I have another optic I don't have a source weapon for and it might be a backup sight for this rifle but I'm not sure yet), my rail (Noveske NSR 7) with QD sling swivel (Noveske NSR QD Mount) and grip pannels (Noveske NSR Keymod Grip Pannels x 2), rail ladder (Noveske Ladder Style Rail Protector), and back up iron sights (MBUS). I've also invested in 3- 30rd PMAG's, 1- 20rd PMAG, and 2- 30rd PMAG (John Noveske).

At this point the ladder rail is probably going to be scrapped, I'm not sure if I really like it. Also the magpul irons are probably going to be put on a different rifle in place of Magpul MBUS Pro's, when I find a pair.

    Breakdown List:

    Noveske Gen1
Spike's Tactical Enhanced Lower Parts Kit
    Geissele SD-E
Damage Industries Enhanced Chrome Silicon Buffer Spring
    Noveske/Magpul 60deg Short Throw Safety
Spike's Tactical Mil 6pos Buffer Tube w/T-2 Buffer
    Magpul STR & Butt Pad
    Tactical Link Z-360 Gen 2
    Tactical Link Ghost 1/2 Sling
    Magpul MIAD
    FailZero M-16/M4
    BCM/VLTOR Gunfighter
    Noveske 8.2" chambered for 300-BLK
    AAC Blackout 51T
Aimpoint Micro H-1 on a Larue Tactical Mount
    Noveske NSR 7
    Noveske NSR QD Mount
Noveske NSR Keymod Grip Pannels x 2
    Noveske Ladder Style Rail Protector
    PMAGS
    AAC 762-SDN-6

    Total: 4366usd
    Shipping: 84usd

    Total After Shipping:
    4450usd

    Items I don't have.
    VLTOR MUR-1a
    Tax Stamp
    Magpul MBUS PRO

    Total: 590usd
    Shipping: (estimated 12.50usd)

    FINAL TOTAL:
    5052.50usd

Reading all of that makes me thankful I never posted a thread asking if it was cheaper to build or buy complete. I wasn't going for cost-effective though I was VERY frugal with shipping, often holding out on purchases to combine shipping like on my orders from Noveske and Magpul. I didn't include the secondary sight in my total because I'm not sure it will be part of this rifle, if I decide to use it on this rifle I will add the cost to the final total and list it under the breakout of parts. Also the cost is much higher because of the suppressor which is 1/5 the cost of the rifle in its entireity, it's not pictured as I don't have it yet. Finally, it's worth pointing out that I paid retail or less for all but 2 items listed above. I decided that with Spike's Tactical being on a more than 12 month back-order that I would pay a little extra for the buffer tube and lower parts kit.

*The enhanced trigger guard is a magpul with a Spike's Logo that was part of the lower parts kit.

Actually that looks like the billet trigger guard that came with my Spike's Enhanced kit-- made by Spike's, not Magpul.

Some people told me not to do the math, but I think it's helpful for those who read these threads looking for ideas on their own build. I think it's important for them to see what a $5k AR looks like, and how it is different than a $500 AR.

I have edited the statement to reflect more accurately for future readers, I am certain when I was researching the kit that the trigger guard was made by Magpul and I got that from Spike's website but I'm too tired to find out where I erred at the moment. Strangely a 500usd AR looks like a rifle and a 5000usd AR looks like parts on a wooden tray.

I concur it's the same trigger guard I have that came with the Spikes LPK. It's similar to the magpul winter trigger guard.

I still need to get that NiB trigger to you, I have it set aside and every couple weeks I see it and think, I need to get that to Dubsac.
